Uses for moss removed from lawns
« on: February 03, 2013, 12:28 »
This spring we intend to scarify our lawns as there is a lot of moss.  Can the moss be put into compost bin, used at the bottom of raised beds.

I like to recycle things so needs advice on what to do with the moss.  Thanks.

I seem to recall that moss does not decompose rapidly, although I've never tried it myself.

Could you use it as lining for hanging baskets, for example?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

It takes forever to rot down in compost bins so is better buried - it will disappear eventually.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Yes, this works well.

Thanks for the replies.  I'll definitely use some in my hanging baskets, but looking at my lawns I would be able to supply moss to the whole of the village I live in.

If it's hard to compost then the rest can go in the green bin.

Don't forget to leave some somewhere dry and accessible so the birds can use it in their nests.

Cheers,    Tony.
