Growing tomatoes in the same place every year?
« on: January 15, 2009, 02:52 »
Is this possible or would there be a problem with pests?
I ask because on all the rotation plans i have seen there never is a place for tommies. I think ive figured out where im growing everything this year (its my first year and i have a double plot!) but im not sure about tomatoes. Any advice would be great.  :D

Hi and welcome; you might want to introduce yourself on the welcome forum.

Toms are heavy feeders and can easily fit in with potatoes (heavy manuring) or the next crop down. I personally have grown toms 2 years running in the same spot, but with loads of manure added each year but this year they're getting moved elsewhere. Because I don't get blight where I live I can do this but in the UK its not a wise move as blight spores can easily develop on particularly suspectible crops like toms and potatoes and quickly get out of hand.

I grow mine in the same place every year - it's called the greenhouse.
Sorry, I know that isn't helpful but it is too cold to grow tomatoes outdoors here.

My parents live in Staffs, dad managed to grow toms outside last year, not sure what though?

Not having a green house i've grown mine outside for three years. Its a bit of a gamble but i've been pleased with the results. I grew Red Alert last year, a bush variety, these did very well. This year i'm trying Gardeners Delight, and Tomato Gartenperle, which i'm going to try growing in a hanging basket, so fingers crossed.
Life is a heap of manure. Growing one minute, stinking the next.

Don't know about at your altitude, Matron, but I grow them outdoors here every year!

I just use any variety I fancy, whether recommended for the greenhouse or not.

The climate as such is not the problem - it's the blight that comes with it.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I like red alert outside and the bumph in the catalogues say they fruit before blight hits. They are very early so perhaps they are right.Might help anyone worried about blight.
They are the sort that fruits all at once and is then mostly finished quite quickly. This is ok for me cos i freeze these ones and have other ones in g/h for salads.

I have vague recollections of someone talking about changing the soil in their g'house, but can't remember whether they did it regulalrly or not. I got the impression every few years, but it might have been a one off. I'm pretty sure it wasn't every year though.

I want to try outdoor ring culture some time but it's not likely to be this year as I have so much else to do for the first time. I think I saw this on a lottie at the other site. Basically you dig a trench a few inches deep and line it with plastic (I have a long narrowish offcut of pondliner) you fill the trench with course gravel/pebbles/shingle or whatever it's called, then put your rings (or in my case large pots with the bottoms cut off) onto that. Water goes into the trough feed into the pots.
I just need to remember to put the trench across the slope. ;)
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

We have grown Toms in the G-House for the last couple of years in a dedicated bed,i change the top layer of soil and add compost and well-rotted manure each spring and Comfrey leaves ripped up;so far no real problems with pests or blight(touch wood!).
Once upon a time I could control myself

Tomatoes are botanically the same family as spuds - hence also being susceptible to blight, which definitely can decimate tomatoes.

Blight is a spore-carried disease but it's possible for them to overwinter in the soil, so I'd count them as spuds on your rotation plans.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Had to read that twice DD - I thought you said attitude.
We are high up DD - only a couple of miles from Leek Moorlands and not far from Flash (highest village).
I should say that I grow my toms in pots in the greenhouse.

thankyou all for your answers.
i think i will grow them next to my potatoes then. if one gets blight it will be passed on to the other, is that right?
i can accept that, i suppose, but there wont be an increase in the risk of blight per se, will there?
thanks, again.
