Are they expensive to make/buy? Really keen to keep chickens, but have to watch the pennies at the mo?

Hi My OH makes all our coups out of pallet crates, he lines them with ply wood, and then makes a roof, that can be taken off. Cheap and serves the purpose!
Dont count ya chickens till they hatch!!!!!

try ads for free or papers, have a look out for second hand rabbit cages, i used to keep two of my girls in an old rabbit cage it was really ideal, just fixed in a perch for them, even a 2nd hand dog kennel, my 3 girls are currently living in a dog kennel, we fixed in a perch and its a great job.   nickyx

We made ours from old fencing and a few pallets. With the roofing that you don't neccesserily need and the wire we spent about £200 but the coup and run we made would have cost nearer £800 or more if made by a supplier.

Our first was just a square box, about 3 foot by 3 foot by 3 foot, made from 3/4 ply, with a square door cut and hinged at the front. The roof was just another piece of ply resting on the top (the back of the coop 6 inches higher than the front, to make a sloping roof. The lowest bit at the front is so I can reach in for cleaning and egg collecting. VERY cheap, effective, inexpensive. No fancy bits to harbour mite etc.  OH has since added a nest box to the side.
