Courgettes
« on: May 01, 2008, 15:03 »
I grew some Courgettes on the window sill of my utility room as that gets the sun most of the day.

This was from seed and the leaves were a brilliant dark green and I was really chuffed.

I was told to transfer outside and place pop bottles over the top to act as a cloche.

Unfortunately, the Courgettes changed colour in fading to a very pale green/yellow.

I was going to pull them out, but when looking down the stem, I noticed some new leaves, so decided to stick with it even if they looked awful.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Before you planted them out, did you harden them off for about a week? (putting them outside for an hour or two daily to adjust to the stronger sunlight and cooler temps). Cloching doesn't help without some hardening off.
Looks like you have a combination of some leaf scald from the strong sun and some nutrition lack in the old leaves.
Definitely leave the plants as new leaves do appear and are already adapted to direct sunlight.  They also seem to like the nutrients in the soil, so you're set. Just need patience now, and occasional watering if things get dry this summer.

My cucumbers did the same, but once I was able to plant them in the greenhouse they picked up.  They only went in last weekend and the transformation is amazing.

rem that the old courgies are gross feeders - so a bucket of muck under does wonders!!  I  use them to cover redundant ground to keep the weeds down!! They grow huge!!

They look very close together - shouldn't courgette plants be 2' apart?
