Complete newbie advice on equipment needed
« on: August 31, 2009, 21:45 »
Hi All,

I would like to start brewing my own beer (lager and bitter) but I have no equipment or any experience at all so not sure where to start.

So if I was to start with a larger what equipment should I buy? Or is there a good kit available to get me started.

Thanks

Stu

It may be worth you starting with a kit.

If you go to your local Wilkinsons, you should be able to get everything you need.

You'll need a fermenting bucket, syphon and sterilizing agent. You will then need to buy a kit of the bitter / lager of your choice and a kilo of sugar. I like the Geordie Mild make.

Follow the instructions on the kit, which will basically be to empty the contents of the can into a big saucepan, mix in quantity of sugar and boiling water - use some of the boiling water to rinse out the can. You then tip that into your sterilized bucket and top with cold water to 5 gallon mark and then tip in your yeast packet. Put the lid on and leave in a warm place until it's finished working - about a week.

You'll need pressurised bottles then. I keep fizzy water / pop bottles and sterilize those. You can spend more and buy grolsch type bottles if you wish. You must ensure that the bottles can take a build up of gas. You place a spoonful of sugar in each bottle and I put a drop of hot water in to dissolve. You then syphon in your beer, leaving a half inch gap from the top. Screw top on - job done!  :) When you see hold the bottle up to the light and it is clear, it is ready. It will taste better if left for a few weeks though.

Good luck - the main thing to remember is hygiene - sterilize everything, wash your hands thoroughly etc before you start.

Went down to my local wilkinsons today and they had only Geordie lager and beer canisters and a couple of air lock bubble things.

Does anyone know of any other bricks and motar shop which would sell the gear?

I've never watched Strictly Ballroom and if the guy is anything like him i'll never watch it lol.  I cringed at both of them but the info was good.

As for a brick n mortar shop, can't help you there unless you're willing to travel to Glasgow.
