Lawn on allotment?
« on: May 19, 2015, 19:17 »
I`m a new plot holder and was wondering what is the general opinion on this?...I am currently in the process of building a shed at the shady bottom end of the plot and am considering putting a small garden area in front of it, just somewhere to chill after a days plot work.
. . . You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning. . . .

I had a few paving slabs, the wife got involved and it turned into a patio area, and I lost a bed for growing.

I have a bench, Table and two chairs, and I use the table an awful lot during the year. I wouldn't have grass as it's just something else to maintain, but if you have the time to keep it trimmed just think of it as harvesting compost  :nowink:

Some of the folk on our site have lawns, which they maintain impeccably and they look fantastic. You can hear the "push along" mowers regularly, and it is a real blast from the past  :D

I'd say go for it, if you can sacrifice the growing space !!

Growing space and time / effort to keep it under control. If that all seem a sensible thing then a nice lawn on an allotment looks very nice.

It sounds really lovely, but you might want to check your tenancy agreement first. Some people have a little lawn on theirs but our 75% cultivation rates can make it tough to fit in a lawn once the ground taken for paths, sheds, storage is taken into account.

That said, they do look good.

I 'cultivate' quite a lot of grass and weeds for composting for the benefit of the more traditional crops that I also sometimes grow.
That's why I'm on the committee here - maybe should have been a lawyer...

We have a grass area with a table and chairs, for tea/veg prep, (used to be an 8' x 8' bed), and all the paths are grassed, but with no edges, to make mowing a doddle!

If I'm using the grass box, the mowings go on the potatoes!

If you do like Growster, you not only have a lovely place to sit, you can use a very cheap and simple push mower to use the grass clippings for mulching. Simples!  ;)
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I have a "lawn" on my plot. It's just plot that I mowed. Loadsa weeds in it but it looks fine once it's had the mower over it.  The mowings go in a builder's rubble sack away in the far corner. I even made a pond in it  :)  The lawn, not the rubble sack

Absolutely, Goosers! It gets a bit tiresome shoving the motor mower down the road, and if we have any spare energy, we plonk the little chap over a few paths when it suits us!

(And I fell over the cliff between us and the chap adjoining, when I was using the Mountfield last week, so that's another reason...)!

Was that pre- or post-prandial tinctures?? Seriously though, I hope you are ok.
