hi all
some advice needed please
in my compost bins (one big plastic one and another made from a roll of wire)
i have been putting
wood based used cat litter,
grass cuttings
sawdust collected from the poultry coupe
veg peelings
unused fruit and veg, sliced up
sawdust and straw from rabbits
paper based used litter from the rats
shredded newspaper
trimmings clippings and weeds from the garden etc

am i on the right track or should i be adding anything else

I'd omit the "wood based used cat litter" if I were you.

You might want to add bulk & nutrients by attacking a nettle patch.  Manure from horse/cattle etc layered in is also good.

The roll of wire bin can't get very hot surely?  Better to use that for leaf mould.

would you omit the wood based litter because it contains cat poo and wee, ?
i did wonder about the wire one, but the plastic one is full and i havent managed to by another one yet, ile get one and transfer it.

Personally, I'd not put in dog or cat waste because they contain and pass pathogens that aren't good for human consumption when the compost is used in the veg garden. True, all of it is used for food compost in China, but a lot of Chinese people get very sick. The wood part is slower to break down into compost than the rest of your additions so its best put into another composter just for woody bits. Same with leaves, a bit slower than the main bits but a bit faster than woody bits.

oh i didnt think we would get rats as ive got four cats that are contained in the garden, with access day and night through the cat flap, ive never seen a rat or mouse in the garden, but best not to take any chances, thanks

The bins well it will rot in a wire cage but it will be a cool heap therfore slower and less likely to kill weed seeds etc. Half a dozen pallets 4*4, 5 of em set up in an E pattern. T'other one split to make two gates

ime on it, managed to get two pallets, ime on the lookout for some others, when ive got enough ile be looking for some plans.
