One Space Left - Suggestions
« on: June 02, 2011, 21:03 »
Evening, I have one space left in my garden, abt 2 ft X 2ft in which I am looking to plant something unusual if possible. I have looked in the local garden centre and have been unimpressed with the selection.

I am looking for something I can buy as a grown plant from the internet that will yeild something this year. Any suggestions welcome.

I currently have:

2 types of marrow
Beets
2 types of Gooseberry
Blackcurrants
Redcurrants
Squash
Damson tree
Plumb tree
3 types of tom.
Cape gooseberries
GG artichokes
Grape vine
Kiwi vine
Rhubarb
2 types of cucumber
Various herbs
Semposai greens
Watercress
Pumpkin
3 types of strawberries
3 type of raspberry
Pepper

How about some sweetcorn plug plants, or even planting some sweetcorn seeds?  You're a bit short of space but you have just enough room for a very small block (say 4 plants x 4).

I'm not sure if there is anywhere offering rare or heritage varieties as plug plants, but you can get some spectactular coloured ones, such as 'Black Aztec' or  'blooming Butcher' as seeds and you still just about have time to grow them from seed.

Thaat's only an 8" spacing, never mind any overlap with adjacent plants.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Eh, you may be right, DD, I bow to your superior knowledge.  I guess a 3x3 block would be more feasible, although a 2x2 block would be fairly pointless and a 1 x 1 block even more so

I'm surprised DD hasn't suggested peas.
I'll suggest it for him then?

Go for peas!!!! :-)

(maybe a nice rare tall climbing type? You can get Champion of England on realseeds? Or golden mange tout?)

Even DD cant say they are unusual, for all their loveliness

A rare pea is still a pea - even I say that

Not a lot of space for peas too..I'd go for some kind of chard to try out

@Nige2Plots - this is my first return to growing since I was a wee whipper snapper and I bought most of my plants, seeds without to much fore-planning so Brassica slipped my mind. I may go for them though as I need something on the ground, but I would need somewhere to buy them from. Is it too late for seeds?

@Wombat18 - I saw some sweetcorn in the garden centre today and wanted to buy them. However, my last spot is in the middle and don't want corn overshadowing my ground plants. I checked out the link to JungleSeeds though and really like the look of the dark corn, which I have bookmarked for next year. Or would it be possible to grow corn in a tub?

@mobilekat - I will have a look into the availability of PakChoi or if it can be grow from seed in June-. I was going to go for that but plumped for Semposai Greens.

@TheSpartacat - I don't actually like peas, but I will still eat them. I got some pea seeds for a friend for free on a special offer at vegetableseeds.net, so will see if he has a climbing variety, which I may be able to grow out of the unused side of the compost heap (AKA wild potato forest).

A few, say 6 runer beans?  So many different varieties and a big crop if picked regularly

Lettuce?
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

You haven't got any beans. Your space is in the middle, so a nice wigwam would give the veg plot some height.

You could try some French Beans, we're growing purple podded ones and yellow podded ones as well as green ones.

You could grow something in the middle of the wigwam too, although I'm not sure what.
