Hestia. Most suppliers have them. Can be grown in containers or the ground. I tried them and found they needed a little support - 2ft canes. Cropped well and tasted like runner beans. Also they froze well.

Or Dwarf French beans perhaps? "Masterpiece" is a flat [Dwarf French] bean. Won't taste quite like a runner, but is flat :) and stringless.

dwarf beans will take up as much ground/tub space as the same number of runner beans, they are just not as tall, if that is what you want :)

I'd have thought Dwarf Runner Beans took up the same space for a lower yield of inferior beans - not worth the bother.

Dunno about Dwarf Runners, but Hessayon says (re: yield per 10' row)

Runners 60 lb
Climbing French 12 lb
Dwarf French 8 lb

We grow Runners and Climbing French side-by-side and I reckon we get pretty much the same harvest - but the Climbing French season is a bit shorter - so I definitely wouldn't agree that Runners produce 5x as much crop.

Last year I started off my runners and other climbing beans int the greenhouse as usual, and after an apparetn total germination failure had to start again.  Needless to say the 'failures' came through after all shortly before their replacements, and in due course were planted out and did their usual wonderful runners and climbing beans things.

Rather than ditch the extras, I planted a couple to mingle with clematis in an arch and a couple against the hosue sharing a trellis with quinqufolia.  Finally I bunged the rest into the flower buckets and heaved them outside the kitchen door with canes up against the garage, alongside the salad leaves overflow also in the flower buckets.   Needed lots of water and seemed to appreciate a (modest) bit of feeding.  However although the cropping was nothing like as good as the standard ones in the ground, they were certainly worth the effort and did produce enough to justify their existence.  Need watching though as they do tend to dry out a bit quickly if you are not careful.

Would recommend giving it a go if you are short of space!
