Cucumbers again !
« on: June 29, 2008, 20:45 »
One of my cukes has mildew 2/3 of the way up its stem and consequently the top 1/3 rd has wilted so I've removed it  to just above a healthy leaf axil.
The mildew was caused by me using old stockings as ties and one got wet, then mildew has formed on the stem.

Anyway does anyone know if it will send off a new leader or is that it ?
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

I'm confused. Are you sure it's mildew? :?

I mean how do you find a healthy leaf axil, they tend to start on the leaves.

Downy or powdery is it?  Now, seriously, it starts on older foliage , it can bring healthy looking new leaves but they will become infected, too.

Milk spray, you tried?

Looked like powdery certainly as I moved the stocking you could see "powder" rising off it, the stem was withered and dark underneath

A leaf axil is the point where the leaf meets the stem ie the joint therefore you cut back to just above a healthy leaf axil (joint)

anyway do you know if it will form a leader ?

Anyway, it will bring new growth, healthy or otherwise, depending what it has and how bad it is. Don't think that's the point, though. The point is what it has and how bad it is. It will grow as long as it can, that's beyond a shadow of a doubt.

We do know what a leaf axil is.  Don't see how it can be healthy if the stem is down with mildew. :?
