My wife took some compost from the compost bin and spread it around some of her plants. She now sees  ants in that earth and on her plants. Upon inspection she also sees that the compost bin is full of ants. Any ideas on how to eradicate  the problem please?

I would try to drive them out by pouring water into the compost bin.

See topic "Ants in soil/raised beds" recently started by logi06, and post in that by mumofstig.

That borax/sugar bait will kill an entire ant colony. The borax is not a worry for your plants (boron is a plant micronutrient).  Keep squirrels, etc. Out of the bait by putting it in a disposable plastic container with lid that you have punched or cut holes into (roughly half cm in diameter).

If one ant finds the bait, they all will find it and be gone/dead in 2 or 3 days.
