Is the spore question from aspergilosis angle ?  I know chooks and birds of prey are different, but we usually advise against bark in outside aviary/weathering for this reason.  I presumed it would be equally appropriate so havent put it down for the girls.  They do like the dry leaves though and they're easy to change over at the moment while supply is plentiful.  The aviary floor underneath is gritty earth which gives them a good scratching ground.  It's half covered so although the fully exposed area gets very wet and splodgy with rain, there's always a dusty dry part along the back under the roof.
