Birds hitting the line has never been a problem.  I think that because there are plants right inside that line (some of my tomato plants are 6 to 8 feet tall, peppers and okra about 2/3 the height of the fence), they are flying more slowly as they approach the line.  In the areas where it is more open, I've still not had problems with birds hitting anything.
