Barrels
« on: November 28, 2023, 09:56 »
I have just had a couple of half barrels delivered with a couple of bags of compost

WOW I never knew they were going to be so big and heavy

I'm not sure what I am going to grow in these or even where I am going to put them

Any suggestions ?

The hoops could do with banging into place, the barrels are well weathered though (had to have been stored outside0

I’d probably put some big feeders in there like courgettes or climbing beans with an early crop of lettuce before the courgettes grow too big. Once you’ve banged the hoops back into place, might be worth putting some screws in to keep it in place.

I was thinking of just filling them up with tomato's, rather than having them in various other tubs
Not sure if its worth growing beetroot in them (I could use a whole packet of seeds in there
Not sure I would even want to try courgettes or beans

they look like barrels cut in half as opposed to purpose made tubs the hoops could be pushed up as high as poss. then put some screws thru or under bottom edge of hoop to stop it dropping when tub dries out  they look good anywhere in the garden but as you say heavy .
from bow like to grow

I think they are about a third of a barrel, the center might have been ised for kindling or so other use
If they were half barrels they would be bigger
That's what I will be doing as they dry out, pushing the hoops up and screwing them up
Full credit to the bloke that delivered them, they are a lump and a bit :D

We have five of these which are half barrels we got from a place in Scotland and yes, they weigh a ton. We grow flowering plants in them but they would be just as good for veg. As they don't have a large surface area like a veg bed you could insert canes and put up netting for climbing beans or tomatoes.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I think I'll be sticking with tomato's, I'm going to try and grow  them from seeds next year
I have this mini green house now, so I'll see if its any good, next year
As I have two of them, I'll use one for flowers

I have some rare strawberry plants, they have red flowers, but I dont know their name. . .

Varietes 'Ruby Ann' and 'Berried Treasure' come to mind.  'Tristan' is more of a strong pink rather than red-flowered.

I've looked up those strawberry plants, the Berried Treasure looks about right
But I can't find any sellers that have them in stock, (plants or seeds) maybe the wrong time of the year
I'l have another search in the New Year

(Thanks for those names)
