Success at last.  First sowing in April of 3 types of carrot (Giant Red, Jaune Obtuse de Doubs and Dragon Purple) plus Tender and True parsnip all came to nothing apart from 2 solitary carrots.  I had a go again a couple of weeks ago this time replacing the Giant Red with a 5 year old packet of Early Nantes as I had used the last of my Giant Red.

Well today I observed complete success with 6 rows of carrots and 2 rows of parsnips all peeking through in neat little rows.  Amazingly the parsnip seed is 4 years old! 

The same happened last year.  I think I am going to give up on early sowings from now on, it is just a waste of seed.

All I need now is for the enviromesh to do its job.

So pleased you posted this- I spotted my first parsnip today from my sowing 4 weeks ago of tender & true and have also chucked in more recently some 3 yr old gladiator parsnip seeds just in case.... hopeful now

Interestingly I went for the exact same carrots and parsnips! I also had an old packet of Nantes which I used when I ran out of Dragon Purple...weird huh!!  :blink:
