Alex, it's not a thistle on your spuds - it's a comfrey plant. Cut it down to 6" and pop the leaves between the spuds. It will fertilise them.
Just check my Comfrey Pages (http://www.allotment-garden.org/vegetable/comfrey/index.php) for more uses.
-
There is a thistle next to it, a rare ish speciman seeded from nearby Myddleton House, former home of Mr Bowles the plant collector & horticulturist.

It's not really you, the problem arises from when someone posts an oversize piccie. All the other posts stretch to match which means you text goes trundling off to the right.
I've done a quick edit on yours to put each sentence on a different line so you can see it all. Hope that's OK.
-
My apologies. i have tried resizing it on photo bucket and then editing the post to get a smaller pic on but it doesn't seem to work.
I will keep trying......
Is it too small now? :?:
Sorry again - it's either too small or too big  what am I to do?????
-
When you upload from your pc to photobucket there is an option to resize the photos.
I choose 640x480 for any I'll be posting up on here.
Rob :)
-
yes many thanks poultygeist, I did notice that and have tried to re-size but its either tiny or the 640 x 480 is the size above & when I try the 320 x 240 it blurs the picture
it's the wonders of modern technology you know! :D
-
It's a joy ! :)
btw, if you want to cho up that tree and send it up here in a parcel, I'll see it gets well and truly burned come Christmas :D

-
how come some people can post 10 or more pictures on the photo comp. and others are told to post only 1- Its put me right off even bothering to post mine- Do we have a teachers pet? :?
-
I don't think that's the case at all.
Only one can be entered into the competition. These are the rules. If multiple photos have been posted, they will have to select just one. This has been pointed out to the posters.
After the closing date AS will correlate all entries into one poll so they can all be viewed as one post.
I would suspect that if they don't select a particular photo, then none will be entered at all.
-
am I not reading this correctly? doesn't PHOTO COMPETION_rule no. 1 state that you can enter 1 photo?
-
It appears that it's my post that you're not reading correctly....
Only one can be entered into the competition. These are the rules. If multiple photos have been posted, they will have to select just one. This has been pointed out to the posters.
-
I think public warnings were issued and as it isn't the National Lottery, there is a certain amount of larking about but I'm sure the actual voting procedure will be conducted under the strict rules.
Rob :)
-
Sam - Dear.
The people who have posted more than one picture have been told it is against the rules, either on the thread or by PM - but you know what folks are like. When I sort out the voting tomorrow I will enter the first picture posted or the one that the poster has told me they want entered.
Simple as that !
If you don't like the way the competitions are run then there is no need for you even to read the competition threads. And an attitude like yours will not gain you friends here, were a happy friendly bunch and don't put up with bad manners
-
So how about a plot picture from you Sam :D
-
why is everyone so defencive? I don't think bad manners were used here- if that is how you perceived it- I do sincerly apologize. But I'm afraid I did think it was a fair question- putting teachers pet on the end was meant to lighten the question.
-
So forget about it Sam and post your picture
-
Sam - nobody can see if you're smiling or foaming at the mouth in rage when you post - that's where the 'Emoticons' or smilies come in useful.
I've been very careful to keep the competition fair - as Auntie says, only one photo will actually be in to vote for. The voting system is automatic and gives one vote per registered member. Although we have a prize - it's meant as a bit of fun and the last thing I want is to upset anyone.
Incidentally - nobody (me included) knows who voted for what.
-
Come on Sam - put a smile on :D :D :D & just join in with the fun & enter a photo if that's what you want to do.
If you don't want to post a photo for the competition, you can always have a laugh  at mine & the hard work ahead of me getting my new plot ready!!
Are you smililing yet :?: :?:
:D :D :D I am smiling as this site is GREAT :D :D :D
-
I'm not smiling cos I haven't entered. Too busy to pull all the weeds out to see any veg ! :(
But when there's a 'Ducks in my garden surrounded by bright green netting' competition. You can all eat my shorts that day !!!! :D

Title: Work in progress from April to May 2008
(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk141/SwingSwang/GardenPanoramaAprilandMay08.jpg)
Description: Exactly one year ago I brought a patch of dense laurel which I fenced off. The trees were grubbed out, and 6 tonnes of stable manure were dug in before the winter frosts. The entry above shows the development of my first crops over a the four week period from late April to the end of May.

srebmob - that's rather neat :)

T.y. it's the only way I can persuade SWMBO to allow me to grow veggies in the garden. If she had her way it'd be back to lawn tomorrow!!

There's an echo in here!!
-
I think lawns are just a waste of space unless they have poultry on em or raised beds full of veggies. A green sward just to look and at mow, feed, weed, aerate, repair blah blah blah is just plain dull :D
I don't like lawns, did I mention that 8)

O.K. I get the message! My OH only likes to lie on it in the sun. She wouldn't care if I laid 'astro' turf TBH.
-
I hope she uses plenty of sun screen and a sun shade srebmob.

I also hate lawns, the only reason we have a bit of one (its mostly weeds but don't tell anyone) is so our son has somewhere for his paddling pool

Nice close running all the way. Better than the grand national. :D

Sometimes I do wonder why I entered when I didn't even vote for myself  :!:
-
Someone mentioned that on one of the other compies that all credit should be given to those with no votes, as obviously they did not vote for themselves!

anyone voting for them selves should be made to sit facing the corner wearing nowt but a stinging nettle bikini :D and then get spanked with some soggy lollo rosso
-
That's very reasonable Babe
Firm but fair
-
Wonder if John can write a script to prevent self-voting ?
Or just send babe round with the nettles and lollo rosso.
rob
-
Wish I'd voted for myself now.

If he does that might just encourage strategic voting a bit like Eurovision :D

uh oh. turf wars.
-
Do we vote for the best photograph - as its a photography competition or for the best looking vegetable plot as thats what the forum is about - my brain is confused!!
I really liked the picture down the homemade tunnel taht someone posted but then it wasnt in the selections which was a shame - thought it was an interesting picture photographically speaking!!
-
You just vote for the picture you like the best, or whatever criteria appeals to you.
Or shut your eyes and pick one with a pin..... but be careful not to damage your screen
-
pick me.. pick me.. *jumps up and down waving arms* pick me...
*sobs* only vote I have in my own :D

yup here's the 6th verse.
Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the Queen!
everyone run to scotland and slap a norty scotsboy.... by permission of the queen.
-
You could slap them in the trossachs
...or a bit of a smack in the Gorbals.
Strange how our national anthem incites violence against a part of our own nation. No wonder they don't support our footy team.
Rob
-
corr, finally managed to find out the voting thingy, and it worked, a first for me. Sorry did the pin thing and managed not to damage the screen.
-
Voting ends today so please cast a vote if you haven't done so yet :!:
-
OK fans, time for you all to come out of the woodwork (or weeds, or wherever you've been hiding) and overtake the frontrunners :D
(Well, I can live in hope!)
-
The voting has now closed
and the results are:
Joint 1st - Janie and Weessy with 10 vote each

-
I hear the next one is "My canine avatar from the North East" so you're in with a good chance
Rob
-
Well since we don't have a clear winner, we'll reopen the voting for a day or two until we do. Sorry, I've only got the one copy to offer and cutting it in two would be difficult as my scissors are blunt.
-
I have added one more day to the poll so there is plenty of time for a dozen of you to cast a vote of Aunty 8)
-
Blatant !!
-
What do you mean Rob
-
Trying to persuade the voting public. I'm sure it would be frowned upon in certain other countries at the moment :)
-
I would never do that rob  But I do have a nice damp dungeon complete with rats
-
In the next competition we will simplify things by announcing the winner at the start :)
-
True Mugabe democracy !! :)
Any candidate you like as long as you don't enjoy daylight and food 8)
-

-
There WAS but John didn't want to cut the book in half
So the poll is running for another day.

Congrats Weessy!!! :D

-
Well done Weessy
A hard won prize.
And to all entrants.
Rob :)
-
Since it was so close, Jannie would you like a consolation prize of a copy of my book? If you've got it an alternative is available. I'll PM you.
-
Third prize is two copies.
(Sorry John   )
-
Wow! Thanks to everybody who voted for me, I'm chuffed to bits. Special thanks to freecyclegardener who suggested entering the comp in the first place after seeing the picture in one of my posts. Well done to everybody, looking forward to another comp now as it has been good fun!
-
Third prize is two copies.
(Sorry John   )
Wounded me there! :)
-
Third prize is two copies.
(Sorry John   )
Wounded me there! :)
But surely that would mean one copy for home, and one copy for the shed on the plot...that's a stunna of a plan!
-
Very kind Sal (nice avatar as well!) :)
-
Thanks, he's very naughty, very noisy and very cute (often all at the same time!)
How about a "Favourite Photo of your Pet" comp? My entry:
-
What a cutie :)
We've never had a ginger cat - perhaps one day.
-
Well that's ruined the margins!
We're currently guesting three.
We had two which my daughter took with her when she got her own place with OH.
The tenancy of that fell through when the landlord decided he could get more renting out individual rooms to students.
Result - 2 extra humans & 3 cats in the house as daughter's OH had one also.
This is one of them Christmas before last.
CZ6Yds3llc0
-
Ah bless!
Christmas Trees = HUGE CAT TOYS!!!!
-
I missed the bit where she pulled the tree on top of her, though.
-
He he he...when she swapped from the chairs to the sideboard and then leaned waaaaaay over the edge, I was just *waiting* for her to fall off!

Yes, I've got enough.
