Winter jasmine pruning
« on: February 25, 2009, 12:10 »
We have a bit of hedging between us and next door of winter jasmine that is donkey's years old and looking a bit scratty. It is still flowering but looks a bit tired.
Last autumn, next door decimated part of it from their side which now looks like a pile of twigs.
If I were to lightly clip with shears in a couple of weeks from our side, would that encourage it to flower better next season or does it need careful pruning ??

My book says to cut out the oldest third of shoots after flowering - prune back far enough to allow for new summer growth.  You can go back to the base on that third if desired.  This allows for renewal over a period of 3 years without shocking the plant too much at a time.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I think that they are pretty tough,so you will have difficulty doing to much damage.
Prune immediatly after flowering. Other than that a mulch if it tends to get dry

Thanks folks. I'll give it a haircut in a few weeks. It gets a good mulch of wind-blown leaves in autumn so they should rot down and give it some nutrients as well as keep it moist.
It must be a few decades old (like most things in our garden) so would have a good root system.
