previous broody hen now destroying eggs???
« on: August 06, 2010, 23:23 »
Hi i am in need of help as i have never ever come across this before.
We have a hen who has hatched 2 lots of 7 eggs within 7 months and we have just had another hen go broody which we did not segregate. The previously broody hen has decided to break each and everyone of the eggs that the other hen is sitting  ( within days of hatching ) on, she has refused to leave the hen house and instead continues to sit on guard above the broody hen, 24/7. To this day we have only found the remains of 1/2 an egg and that only being shell, and yes we have actually caught her in the act so it rules out something else getting in there!! We ahve no idea why she is doing this other than her believing that it is her job to hatch the eggs. We have 15 hens and 3 cockerels in total and none of the other are in the least bit interested!!!  Help Please!! Many thanks

Remove the broody hen and the remaining eggs immediately to a broody coup.
There could be a couple of reasons for the other broody to be doing this:-
The first original broody obviously only wants her eggs to hatch (or what she perceives to be her eggs). At this rate you will have no eggs left.
Or she could of course be waiting for any infertile eggs that the new broody has kicked out knowing that they won't hatch.
Hope this helps, but most importantly just in case it is the first reason the eggs and broody need moving now.
Staffies are softer than you think.
