Sparrowhawk
« on: April 04, 2009, 21:00 »
Was in the garden this afternoon and a sparrowhawk came into the garden bothering a pair of local doves. The chickens were out at the time, which got me thinking would a sparrowhawk take a chicken or would they be too big?

We have a sparrowhawk that hunts in the local gardens and I doubt it would be any danger to a chicken.  Ours looks far too small to take on anything that big.  I saw it take a pigeon and it caught it and then had to land as it couldn't fly holding on to it.

Here's a thread from last year that covers the same subject..

I can't imagine one going for a full sized hen either.

I think wood pigeons are the largest prey they can take.  A small bantam and chicks may be in danger though.
