Brassica queries.
« on: April 15, 2009, 19:29 »
Hello all.

Why do I see a lot of circular plastic drainpipe in use around brassicas? And when do I need to start protecting my brassicas with netting and do all varieties need protection?

Keep the faith.
Rictic.

Not sure about the drainpipe, but the first time you grow brassicas, you'll know why people put netting over them.
Last year, ours were all decimated by caterpillars (the netting stops the butterflies laying eggs).

Reasonably priced netting here : http://www.harrodhorticultural.com/HarrodSite/search/product/Butterfly_Netting/GDN-077.htm

The drainpipes hold the netting well...

Most of them need such constant protection from all sorts: caterpillocks, pidjohns, etc.

Do you mean the blue water pipe bent in hoops?
This is to put the netting over once the brassicas get planted  :)

I've only seen pipe like that used around leeks to blanch the stems, i've not seen it on brassicas.
Be interested if anybody knows of another use ???

A bit confusing now,  I naturally thought of water pipes.

To keep slugs off? How are they arranged?

I've no idea about the drainpipes, but do net your brassicas straight away. The butterflies love them and a head of broccoli squirming with caterpillars is not a pleasant thing. On my plot, if I leave any brassica uncovered, the pigeons decimate them in minutes.
Thanks

Hi, I hope you don't mind me hijacking your topic but has anyone got any good tips for a cheap way of making a cage for the netting?  Are hoops better than cane boxes?  It's my first year with a allotment and I've no idea where to start.  Buying a metal cage is completely out of the question - they're so expensive!

I am using it for Carrots, a 10 inch length put on the soil, fill with soil and compost, then sow 5 Carrots on the top, no thining, in theory no root fly, and when it comes to harvest time, pick up pipe, soil falls out and you have 5 Carrots in your hand, I am sowing 5 per week and will do this each week for the next few months, which will be plenty for us.
