Weeds
« on: January 25, 2011, 13:08 »
Is it acceptable to have a 90cm x 90cm bed for growing just weeds (i.e. Dandelions etc...)?

A bit of context... I have a tortoise and am currently spending a fortune on food however their staple diet is mainly weeds.
It can't rain all the time.

It will be the seeds blowing everywhere that people will complain of!

I think you'll be able to find enough weeds around paths and edging on the allotment without growing them specifically.

You would be better off growing cut and come again salad crops, then you and your tortoise can eat together   :tongue2:

You may find that growing "weeds" is against your tenancy agreement anyway - it certainly is mine!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

But D.D. a weed is a plant that is in the wrong place.
A carrot in amongst beetroot is a weed if you don't want it there.
Dandilion leafs are a know salad crop as are fat hen and many others!

I think they only get concerned when a plot become overgrown with weeds and seed heads.
If it was a small area less than a square metre and the seed heads were removed then i couldnt see there being a problem, i know i wouldn't complain and it would be very petty if anyone did.
And if they pull the got to be grown for consumtion card tell them your fattening your tortoise up for Christmas  ;)

Dandelions, fat hen and chickweed.  Could you grow them under a fleece to stop the seeds blowing, or remove the flowers as they appear?   Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Both dandelion and fat hen seeds can be bought to grow as salads (and so can stinging nettle seeds for that matter!).

i have to agree with DD our lottie agreement says allotment must be cultivated and kept in a clean and tidy condition non conformance to the lottie terms and condition can lead to the holder being evicted :(

and this has happened several times because people on the waiting list have complained that the holder has not maintained there plot although having said that the council  where a bit lapsed last year in enforcing this but i know there have been  complaints made to the local parish council to enforce the tenancy agreement this year
as the waiting list grows

Do you have a corner of your garden where you could grow your tortoise's grub instead?  Saves any issues up at the allotment then...

Unfortuately I live above a shop so I don't have a garden  :(

Thanks for all the replies, at the moment I only have one "active" plot next to me as one side is the fence line and the other 2 sides have vacant plots. I think i'll have to speak with the neighbour plot as the tenancy agreement only mentions out-of-hand growth.
