Do you know if the final taste is affected by the different type of malt vinegar?

Is distilled malt vinegar easily available in the shops?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Cheap vinegar labelled as 'Non-brewed condiment' is the one not to use for pickles as it isn't strong enough for preserving. They should be above 5% to work, other than that it's just down to taste (and price) which one you use.

I like the sweeter vinegars for plain pickles - like onions, but like dark malt vinegar for chutney as they're sweetened anyway  ;)

Well, distilled malt vinegar isn't a wine vinegar.

The malt vinegar it is distilled from, is made from malted barley, so I hope you like the taste of your chutney.

You'll have to let us know  :)

I have just used the last of the stewed apple from the freezer for chutney too, and tomatoes, peppers and garlic. All sold. :D

Malt vinegar is hard to come by out here and expensive. We use red wine vinegar for dark stuff and white wine or cider for lighter stuff. There is also a 'salad' vinegar. It's all about 6%. You can get balsamic reasonably priced and I add some to anything with beetroot.

We do indeed Chrissie, but they cater to the local market except when they have their promotions. Aparently they had some malt vinegar on British week but it was the first thing to sell out.

I have ust used 'vinegar' which is 6% and apple vinegar for apply chutneys.
