OMG!! Egg pipping (I think) **Pictures**
« on: March 29, 2011, 18:44 »
You are probably fed up with me asking questions at every stage but......

Had broody hen, gave in got her some eggs, 5 white shelled 1 welsummer. I was given them as a present but the person wasn't too sure of fertility.

Candled them day 6 could see nothing, candled few days later and I could see 2 dark shadows in one white shelled egg (got all excited) candled them a few days ago said egg just had one dark spot floating inside ( gutted).

So I was sure there were no viable eggs although I knew I couldn't be sure about the Welsummer egg.

Today is day 20 and when I had let Betsy out to stretch her legs I decided to listen to the eggs, all quiet until I tried the Welsummer egg and I could hear faint chipping sounds over and over again. Do you think I could be in for a surpride tomorrow after all!

I had planned on getting chick crumb last saturday but I was so sure that nothing was going to happen I didn't bother, IF I get a chick I will have to have a quick shopping spree!  :D

It's hatched already  :D
Lifted Betsy just to see if there was even a hole in the shell yet and chick was lying there, I quickly let Betsy sit back down again.
Seen no movement but I did only get a quick peek, hope all is well  :)

You must be so excited - it must have been very special lifting Betsy up and seeing the chick there! I am sure Betsy will take good care of things.

dont rely on the eye and head markings on welsummers - last year we hatched 2, both had really well defined lovely eye markings and very defined dark triangle head patches supposedly the sign of being female. Both turned out to be great big strapping cockerels and went to live with Jobson and his friend  :)

Thanks Joyful  :nowink:

Suppose I will just have to wait and see  :D

At least if it is a cockerel a Welsummer is a nice one to have. I don't have a cockerel at the moment and I do live in a rural area but I wouldn't choose to have a cockerel, but it was the risk I took when I let Betsy sit on the eggs.

If it is a boy we will have to live with it and see how it goes.  :)

fingers crossed, just keep looking at the colouring on the chest feathers - more of a salmon colour on a female and not red/golden with black stripes down like the male (when it gets reid of its downy feathers anyway  :)).
