hi all i am new to this site ,i have had a alllotment for 3 years i need a new strawberry bed i was wondering if any one has grown from seed ,could you let  me now  thanks

i think its best to take runners for next year myself

I planted some seed last year, out of several packets only about half a dozen plants have lasted out the winter, 2 in pots are now a decent size to plant on (the others were planted out last year) they will work, but need at least a years run in before expecting them to bear fruit in my opinion (I may have planted them out a bit small).

Personally I wouldn't bother with growing from seed.

It takes ages for them to mature, as Grendal said.

My father tried it - ended up with a large number of Alpine type strawberries. Very small fruit but loads of them. A novelty more than anything else.

Either buy a few new plants so you can propogate from future runners and expand your strawberry bed or see if anyone near you has spare runners at the end of the season. Most people are likely to have spares that are not needed.

I have to agree with grendal on this one I,m afraid mine were all grown from seed last year . . . germination rate for me was quite high but survival of the plants themselves was not high . . . I have approx. 20 left out of about 70 . . . . buying strong plants and then taking runners is what I regret not doing last year lol

thanks guys for your info going by what you said looks like i will have to get new plants ,the ones i have got left dont look good the winter did  a lot of damage i moved the plants last year  looked like a bad move i put them down the bottom of my plot , its on a slop so to much water .so try again and keep learning .this is the joy of gardening
