Compost bins anyone
« on: September 10, 2017, 15:09 »
  my neighbour put three compo bins on my patio today. He doesn't need them now as he's built a bay system.

My plot already looks like a compost bin breeding programme  :D  my husband won't notice I'm sure  ::)

As one compost afficionado (sound so much nicer than Nut, I feel ) to another, I think the bins have found the best possible home and will be absorbed seamlessly into the landscape in no time at all  :nowink: :nowink:

It's getting a bit bonkers! I will have to start disguising them    I have a problem I think. Is there a support group d'yer suppose?  8

I offered my son one of them and he was very appreciative but asked me to look after it for him but said would visit it often 😀

If there is, I probably need to join as well

I have 5 big wooden bins, 2 darleks and a couple of big white dumpy bags that I use when everywhere else is brimming over. The small plot is currently sporting one of these and its nearly full

Its nearly time to start digging the oldest stuff in, so that's my excuse

The builders rubble sacks are brill!  I like one for my plot grass mowings but someone nicked mine!  Emptied the  grass out into the hedge   They make excellent raised beds   I used to fill mine with chicken droppings and bedding

My Patch neighbour found a fox living in his compost heap!

Ours is just a mess, and I might just tip it all out on one pile, and use it for the four-hundred courgette plants we'll probably get next year...

It's the warmth coming off it that foxy will appreciate  :)

If it's not working tip it out and put it all back in. Or give it a good poke, broddle, mix with a big bar  :)

Good exercise  :D

Just catching up on the chat and thought I would let you know I have a got al lovely new pair of compost bins - pallets do come in handy.  OH has even made easy pull off gates to get the stuff out.  And he lined them - all proper like with weed supressent.  They are lovely and there is some compost envy going on ;) :D

Ah a thoughtful husband is such a boon. I have a pallet bin but my husband used about fifty darned screws to fasten the front pallet on. Where was he when the thing wanted emptying?  :nowink:   ::)

I had a compost day the other day. Emptying a cooked bin and sieving it with a broken sieve  :( :D  I have another barrowful waiting in the wings to refill the empty bin. hey ho.  I should have arms like Popeye!

Good thinking, CQ!

Will plan ahead and do that in - say - February...;0)

Like the idea of a big bar though, plenty of room for a few tinctures...

I need to make a pallet bin, and have started to collect pallets from my builders merchant (they are keeping some for me). A friend has 2 horses and as much muck as I want.. She bagged up 10 rubble sacks (that I dropped off at her house the other day) and I took them to the plot. They filled a compost bin. The wildlife that she calls 'sh*t-flies' have already done some work to it, but it's not suitable to generate heat to kill the grass/weed seeds in it.

Also been watching youtube vids on composting, and many insert plastic tubes with holes drilled in them, into the centre of the heap to let air circulate. You learn something new everyday..
