Title: Cucumbers and Tomatoes
Post by: oakridge on October 06, 2015, 11:48
In the Spring I filled 4 of those large green re-usable grow bags with the three holes, 1 with bought grow bag compost, 1 half and half grow bag and my compost and two all my compost.  I planted two cucumber plants and ten tomatoes.  I am just dismantling the tomatoes which have done very well apart from being a bit slow to ripen. The cucumbers died - twice, two I had grown from seed and two were bought.  One cucumber was planted in the grow bag compost and one in my compost.

Hugo doesn't understand it either.

Malcolm

P.S. Hugo is our Flatcoated Retriever who has been watching too much Gardener's World and is turning into a Nigel.

My melons died but the cucumbers are still going. Stopped watering the tomatoes for the last few weeks and have taken them out today...I have fed the neighbours for a few months with mine.
Melons were in a slightly cooler section and I think the high daytime and cold nights at the start of June was their demise.
I grow in soil which was manured 2 years ago....lousy at feeding as well.

Cucumbers are known for self destructing on a whim, and the weather has been very unhelpful this year, so I'm not surprised at all.

Is Hugo as handsome as Nigel  :nowink:

Here is Hugo our Flatcoated Retriever.  He isn't always like this, he can be a giddy idiot.

Hugo is clearly the chap to ask about cucumbers, Malcolm, as there isn't a single person on this site who understands why cucumbers are destined to fail...

We always buy a packet of seeds and sow the lot, and just wait for them all to die off one by one, so we eventually get four plants and they just whiz off, and give us - and the dog - enough to realise a crop, then they just fold their leaves and die early!

Who is Nigel anyway?

Oh, dear, Growster your education is sadly lacking.  Nigel is Monty Don's dog, the real star of Gardener's World.

Oh Lor...

We never watch any TV these days, Malcolm, although I did take Monty's advice a few years ago, (passed on by a chum down at The Patch), and sowed carrots nice and late - and of course, he was right!

I always forget when Gardener's World is on anyway...

(It's not the same as "Get down Shep", is it)?
