Introducing a new POL hen to my flock of 2 :0)
« on: September 16, 2008, 13:21 »
I am in the process of "operation claim the garden back" from my 2 Warrens through extending their attached run so that they can stay inside the run area and I can take the "temp" fence down (it has been up for 15 months!!)

However I am also thinking about getting a 3rd hen and am wondering how I should go about introducing her to the girls (The 2 hens I have are approx 18/19 months old)  would the hen be in for a rough time?

Hi FC.

I've never done this, but the advice is normall that you should place her in a separated section of run so that they can all see each other and they should get used to being together.
As for night-time, I think you can try and place her in the coop and see what happens. They may be more accepting at night.

Someone who knows what they're talking should be along soon.

Woops just read this one http://www.chat.allotment-garden.org/viewtopic.php?t=23894

However any advise would still be great (any hens to steer clear of etc)

That seems a good thread for you to make your own decision from. As I said, I've no experience of it, so I can't say whichh method is best. :)

I think it can get quite violent but you'll be able to gauge it as they go along.

Also, I'm no use on breeds because we only have Amberlinks and they are pretty laid back although they do need attention. By that I mean, they get bored easily and like company and stimulation. :)

Is it possible you can introduce 2 rather than the 1. It would be fairer on the newbies when they get any aggro from the others. Safety in numbers and it would even up any bother. If just 1 gets picked on it seems a bit unfair.
Oh for those halcyon days of England long ago
