Thin shelled eggs edible?
« on: June 24, 2012, 11:27 »
Speckles eggs shells are thin shelled, they are rough rather than smooth as Pecky's. If very thin the girls eat them. She is 6 years old so it is an age thing as oyster is always available and they have the garden.
Is it alright to eat her eggs as the shells are thin or should I no longer bother? Can they be contaminated with chook poo etc?

They will be fine to eat. Maybe just use them before the others.

I have a couple of older silkies that where having the same problem, quite often they were laying eggs with no shell at all as well as thin rough shells. I tried everythin and nothing seemed to work.
It went on for 8/9 months until I started to put my young birds out in the garden with the older girls. I was mixing 1part chick crumb, 2parts mix corn, 2 parts layers pellets, 2parts growers pellets and 1part no waste bird seed. I know it sounds complicated but it isnt, and since they have all been sharing the older girls are laying the most lovely eggs whith good quality smooth shells.

I do not know if it may be down the the higher protein levels, whatever it has soarted the problem  :D

if you feed an egg layer on chick crumb then make sure that the chick crumb is not medicated. If it says ACS or medicated on the label then you should not eat the eggs.
Staffies are softer than you think.
