Is it true that a cockerel will only mate with a hen that's in lay?
I hope so, as i've just seen Gregory having a bit of fun with one of my POL Marsh Daisies. Haven't had an egg for a couple of weeks from any of my girls so it might be good news!

Im not sure if they only mate when the hen is in lay. I think they still do anyway but im not 100 per cent sure

I also read that cockerals do not mate with a hen unless it is in lay (katie thear chicken book) but from our experience this is not the case - our silkies have grown up with each other and the male started experimenting from about 23 weeks - still no eggs from female silkie and they are around 30 weeks now and he is at it with her every time you turn your back.

I have about 20 pairs of chickens and all that I can tell you is that if I put a new cock in with a hen, he's at it in a thrice whether she be in lay or not. Our Katie is wrong. :shock: What have I said ? :shock: :shock: :shock:
