Skinning broad beans
« on: July 07, 2014, 20:31 »
There must be a quick and simple way of removing the skins off the individual beans as the only podded beans I've ever bought are skinless. How can this be quickly achieved?

I boil the beans and when cool, make a cut near the attachement point then just gently sweeze.  Slow process I'm afraid.

Cheers,   Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Brian likes them just as they are so I don't bother.

Do you cook them in their pods?  When I tried it the pods got full of water which splurted out onto the plate when you stuck a fork into them

Oh sorry, did you mean taking hem out of the pods?  I thought you mean the way they take off the outer skin of the bean itself, not the pods!   :( :(

No, I just pod them like peas, but they are a pan in the bum.  Forget I said anything!   ::) ::)

No I was asking about skinning them AFTER podding them. I never thought of cooking the pod as well

That's what I thought you meant!  Like I said, I don't bother as Brian likes them as they are, especially when they are young and tender.  I think you can cook them in the pods if the pods are still small though!

Sorry to add to the general confusion :nowink: :nowink: :nowink: I thought somebody had found a solution to tedious de-podding. :D

I never take the skins off, if the eaters in our house don't like them they remove their own, but most don't mind one way or the other.

Just pouring boiling water on them and leaving for a few minutes softens the skin. Then you can  nick the skin with a nail and squeeze the bean out, sometimes they will split anyway. Better to do it while watching the telly as doing it standing staring at the splashback is boring!
