Bad back
« on: April 27, 2008, 12:04 »
Could not believe it, got up this morning, started to load the car up to go down to the field, twisted round to pick an item up from the floor and my back went, am now laid up. was going down to put the last few rows of spuds in, one good thing I would have got wet as about an hour later we had a thunder storm. Fingers crossed the back will be okay soon, want to catch up with all the planting I have missed today, well this now means many an hour on the net using the laptop to pass the time away.

Aww get well soon.

Mine went funny at Christmas and I spent the first two weeks of Jan signed off work. Then OH's got twisted... so we are now pretty behind with our plot now.

Hope yours gets better soon.

try to do some gentle excersise, but DONT over do anything!
I've just seen the back specialist at my local hospital. He wanted to show me the results of a scan on my spine, and the damage I've caused it permanently from over doing things.

The advice for bad backs now is as someone already advised, gentle mobilisation within your pain limits. Immobility is the worst thing you could do. If you have no contraindications you could take a short course of anti-inflammatories such as Ibuprofen but take them after food to minimise the side effects. If you have ever had an ulcer don't take them, if you take aspirin for other conditions check with your doctor about stopping it whilst you have a short course of these. Also a few asthmatics react badly to them but if you have asthma and had them before no problems. Hope you feel better soon  :)

to add a sidenote to Milly
Ive had a bad back before now, and some arthritis symptoms unrelated to that
I  found it helpful to do stretch exercises while actually in the bath, its a very good way of loosening up

Thank you all for your advise, I am now sitting in the lounge, will give the back slight exercise, and keep mobile, have had back trouble for many years, that comes and goes. Will be taking it steady for the next week to allow it to mend, so more time on the PC, also can catch up with all my paper work.

I'd recommend seeing a registered osteopath.

Mine can sometimes give instant relief with a simple movement (no pain involved). He also gives me stretching exercises to do so that it is less likely to reoccur. Cost about £40 for an hour. I only need go about 3 times a year  :)

Hi Yummy, thanks for your advise, the problem is on the lower No2  on the spine, requires to be fused, but have been advised only do it as a last result, as I can go for months with out a twinge. Once the joint clicks back in, it only leaves a slight ache for a few days.

Yep, you must keep your back moving and when it recovers strengthen up all your core muscles, to prevent it happening again  :(

My back went into spasm and you can't do nothing but take pain relief as every movement is agony.  I took a combo of paramol and 600 mg Ibufren from the doc but this was the day after. I had nothing to relieve the spasm until she gave me some tranquillisers.  That was for if it happened again. I carry them with me just in case cos I never want to go through that again

So now I don't do diggin but still manage to enjoy my plot nontheless  :D

In the name of all thats holy dont do anything else stressful.

I'm in my 20's and I'll have a bad back till the day I die because I tried to "tough out" something similar.

Either that or until they develop some new wonder surgery.

my old man had to have neurosurgery but he's sorted now thank goodness. He's changing his car though, today in fact, as he's been getting sciatica cos of rubbish car seats combined with too much driving. He's playing footy again and he's 52 ish so glad he agreed to have the surgery
