Trumpet Vine
« on: May 03, 2021, 09:23 »
Hi,

Does anyone have experience with this plant? I’m hoping to put it in a container on my patio and have it climb up an obelisk. I’ve read that it can be quite invasive though so not sure if to go ahead with it or not.

I love them, but have always avoided because of it being so invasive.  Maybe a container will slow it down.  Mrs Bouquet

Well, It will be in a container on a patio away from the lawn. Guess i'll just have to hope for the best, just want something to replace my failed Bougainvillea effort.

Trumpet Vine is native here, and further north, up to southern Canada.  Yes, it is quite invasive. The vines climb trees, heights of 10 meters are not unusual. You could try it as a container plant, but the container needs to be large with a sturdy trellis.

I'm not familiar with it, but it might be worth checking out how it is propagated.  If it's by seed, consider whether seeds from the plant will be blown into the rest of your gardening at the relevant time of year.  If not by seed, then I'd have thought that a container would limit the spread of it and its invasiveness.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Propagates by seed, cuttings, division of roots/clumps, layering.

Be careful handling the plant, as leaves and other plant parts can cause itching, burning and inflammation. Ingested plant parts are toxic, so keep away from children and pets.
