We are in the process of making raised beds on a clay soil.  The base was forked over with manure mixed in.  Then another layer of top soil and finished with a layer of manure.  We were actually preparing the soil for next spring when it would have rotted down nicely but want to plant garlic and onions.

Can we plant garlic and onions straight into this soil now or would it just rot.  If not is there anything we could do to make it right?

ive just planted my garlic with manure on top,also sring green,you can plant any over wintering stuff, like onions, couliflower ect if the munure isnt too fresh i quess,but wait for others to reply gl mick

You could trowel a small shallow trench where your garlic will be planted and put in some soil and plant your cloves in that so, if the manure is too fresh or you are afraid of it holding too much water, it shouldn't affect your garlic; then when spring comes the manure should have rotted nicely and their roots can grow into it.
