Damn! Damn! Damn! - Spud Question
« on: February 07, 2009, 10:40 »
As some of you will remember, I put my spuds in my greenhouse last week before the weather turned bad ready for chitting. Obviously with Jack frost being out and about, I'm now a bit concerened that he might have been at them.
Although there are no visible signs, the temp. in the g/h was down to minus 3 for a couple of days?
They were covered with single sheets of newspapers and bubblewrap as a precaution before the weather turned, so what do you reckon, will they be ok?

If they've been frosted they'll go mushy, so you'll be able to tell if they are OK

Hi Andy
As aunt Sally says they will go mushy if they have been frosted. Once things warm up a bit you will find out what has been affected if any. I think you will be ok :)

Heres another spud question seems last one been ans.

Ive put my potatoes chitting for a week now and my first earlies (home guard) chits are about 2inches long already and have turned purple. where as my seconds and mains are about 1inch and and yellowy/green colour.

Is this ok for my earlys? and how long do the chits gets?

Not grown spuds before so not sure if i need to be worryed.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Sounds like they're too warm.  The chits ideally want to be about that size when you plant them out (any longer, and you'll have the devil of a job to bury them without snapping them off by accident).  Do you have somewhere cool (but frost free) and reasonably bright without being in direct sunlight that you could move them to?

Someone said that if your chits are too long too early, you can knock them off and they'll re-grow, but I haven't got my spuds yet, so no chits!!! lol

Yes, you can knock the chits off.  You can do it a few times.  When you go to plant them, just keep four top most chits on and knock the rest off.
