Title: Pumpkin leaves turning yellow???
Post by: N.WalesIdealist on May 14, 2011, 18:50
Hello! My pumpkin leaves that I planted out a few weeks ago are turning yellow and the lower leaves are dieing off, anyone got a clue why?! They're planted in a big pile of rotted chicken manure and conpost with a few lettuce in between and covered with weed fabric. Watering isn't a problem, it's tipped it down for a week or more!

Possibly too cold at night.

It certainly was for us when we were in North Wales last week!

I still think it's the cold, rather than a disease.

I to think its the cold.

We are close to you in N Wales and its been very cool and sometimes cold here these  past 10 days. Today it is cold enough to have the Central Heating on. I have just come back from the plot because the wind and driving rain meant I couldn't do anything of use.

Any temperature below about 10C is a problem for most of the young, tender, summer crops; add wind-chill to that and it becomes a serious problem unless some sort of protection can be provided.

It is very normal for pumpkin plants to have the original leaves on the vines turn yellow and die off.  However, look at the under side of your leaves to make sure it isn't a nasty sort of beetle, aphids, etc. helping themselves to those luscious leaves!  They might be a tad water logged too.

After that really hot April I too was seduced into putting stuff out a bit early and my courgettes are behaving similar to your pumpkins. I think they are sulking because of the cold. Hopefully things will improve in the next week or so.

I planted the pumpkin plants out about a week ago and some of the leaves are yellow. However they were turning this colour in the greenhouse. I checked for bugs but they were clean. I posted this question just a day or so ago. Most people say it's just too early for them to go out. Of course now it's windy and cold but the remaining leaves still look healthy. I'm also growing mine vertically to save space. x
