Storing new potatoes
« on: July 26, 2012, 09:27 »
I know its best to keep the spuds in the soil till needed  :tongue2:
Now with the foilage dieing, Do i still need to water them ? while they sit there waiting to be eaten  :tongue2:

And how long can they be stored in the compost for ?
I am not worried about them becoming old& big as long as they are still edible  :tongue2:

Title clarified for search purposes

First, an important question. Are the tops just yellowing in the normal sequence of maturing or do you have brown blight spots. If you think it is blight cut the tops off and bag them.

Stop watering, leave them in the compost until you need them. They will not get any bigger. They can stay in the compost until frost threatens in the Autumn.

I would wait 2 weeks after the foliage has gone and then dig them up. Sort them into good and damaged one's and use the damaged one's first. Get some paper sack's from your greengrocer and put the spud's in them and store in a cool dry place. Check them now and again for slug's or diesease. If you leave them in the ground you will be sharing them with slug's etc.
