Went into the greenhouse this morning to discover a green beetle on one of my tomato plant stems.  It wasn't a shiney beetle, more the colour of young green shots, half an inch long with short legs.  I've been on t'internet and looked in my I-Spy book of scary insects but haven't found anything like it. 

There was just the one.  My greenhouse is near my raspberry canes and also by a lot of trees; a contributing factor perhaps?

Any clues anyone?

Yes it was but not shiney at all, very green but slightly transparent.

Sounds like a green shield bug, (yes really). I get them on my raspberries.

They suck sap, but do little damage so I let them live.

Now I feel like a murderer   I just panicked.  Where do you think it came from and will there be more?

Pound to a penny, your raspberries, as I mentioned earlier.

They hunt in packs!!!

No - not really, but you may find a couple more. Never squished one yet.

I had an idea it might be linked to the raspberries.  Still feeling like a murderer.

Probably a shield bug as Dave says  - very common on Raspberries.

Yes, yes, yes, that's the little blighter!  Found one more about an hour ago but didn't kill that one.  I just put it into mother-in-law's garden.  Is it poisonous!!!!!

No, not poisonous (though I wouldn't recommend eating them  ). Don't think they do any significant damage, and I never see them in any numbers
