Poorly Quince
« on: July 23, 2008, 21:14 »
My lovely quince (about 6 years old) is not happy at all. It has developed brown spots all over the leaves and they are starting to drop off. Whats wrong with her. She has been producing loads of quince for the last 3 years or so.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Looking in my expert book, it could be a few things. Can you take a piccy of an infected leaf Kate ?

We've got an ornamental Quince which has set a few fruit this year with no problems as yet.

Is yours a true quince (cydonia) ?

It's a true quince. Usually get loads of quince that are great for pies and have loads of orders for quince brandy

Not a great pic but here goes

I've had another look in my expert book and it doesn't match any of the problems.
I think they are closer to plum than apple in pruning so susceptible to similar infections presumably.

have you ever pruned, and if so, when ?

Hmmmm
Not really got the hang of pruning. Its not very old and have kind of just left it to its own devices. My neighbours did chop off some of the branches that overhung their garden as it is right by the fence. Can't quite remember when that was. Think it was last autumn.

I've no idea about the leaves, but nice courgettes cabbages & ducks!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Yes, everything else is growing like, well like a weed! Think it is the liberal application of duck muck to everything. Don't get why the quince is so unhappy. The apple, cobnut, currants, veg patch etc are doing better than any other year since I got the ducks. They even mow the lawn and eat the slugs and weeds. Do more gardening than me
