Overwintered Onions
« on: March 04, 2011, 11:02 »
Here goes.... newbie and learning from scratch!
I have some onions planted last year - so I guess this means I have overwintered them?!
They are still very green and I'm guessing they are not growing to much as they are planted too close.  Am I able to move and spread them out at all, or would they prefer to stay as they are?  Also when can I expect to pull them up? I'm assuming I wait for them to look a bit sorry for theirselves, just not sure how long it'll take! Sadly they have been neglected and not fed etc as an extension took over our life for a few months and I had no time, but now I am eager and back to it!!

I also have leeks, again only smallish but should I be pulling these now - would I have to pull them all and freeze them?

Thanks for any advice

Hi

Can you give us a bit of clarification, Onions planted when last year ? did you sow seed or plant small bulbs known as 'sets'.

Same question with the leeks, when did you sow them.  Are they quite tall now or young plants.

Unless otherwise stated it can be assumed ALL posts are by Pa Snip

Ditto(ish)

When did you plant the onions and what do you call too close?

Overwinter onions don't store too well, so the usual advice is to lift them as you need to use them, once they are big enough to do something with, not necessarily full sized.

I'd start using the leeks now, when they start growing again in a month or so, they'll run to seed. They don't all need to be lifted together.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks for that advice - they were all planted as sets - I can't remember when . They were bought from a market.  I'm guessing late last summer/autumn if that sounds right but it really is a guess - I have now learnt I need to note dates for everything down!! :-)

They won't grow much until the weather warms up.

You didn't say how far apart you planted them, it might not be an issue.
