Here's what the BBC says about companion planting, including marigolds:

I think the general opinion is that anything that "helps" prevent Carrot Fly is not enough. You might be lucky and not have many fly about in your area, but if you do even the few that manage to fly over the barrier, or are not deterred by the smell of Marigold / Garlic / Onions ... will do a lot of damage to the crop - and lay their eggs in the soil for a renewed attack next year :(

If you subscribe to that theory then you need an enviromesh enclosure (which is not open to the sky)

When you say enclosure, what exactly are we talking, please?

An enclosure probably brings up connotations which are a bit grand.

Either laying the mesh on top (after they are big enough), or draping it over hoops / supports / a wooden cage
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Maybe brightly-coloured rubber gloves planted amongst the crops would work better  :)

I meant only that no part was open - i.e. the cover encloses the carrots. It is said that Carrot Fly cannot fly more than 2' high so a barrier (without roof) is enough, but if some get carried on air currents over the barrier then they still do damage.

Marigolds might repel a few pests but I wouldn't risk the crop on it. Best to cover with mesh to ensure, rather than second guess, the protection.

Some believe chives will repel carrot fly, but only if you've got a very minor infestation.

Mrs Growster always plants a few marigolds in the greenhouse, in pots, and swears by them!

(Not literally you understand, she doesn't actually stand there cursing at them all day...)
