Hello everyone, this is my second year at attemping to grow veg to match the big boys at some local shows, far from being a expert but im getting there slowly ::)
So i posted this topic to show and tell you about the veg i entered at the one of shows i go to... and to see what you all think
First, my kelsae onions in the dressed onion class which came second
Second, my kelsae onions as grown which also came second
and third, which im absolutley chuffed with is my padron peppers which came first and won best in the class
Not alot veg entered though as there were competiters there who entered 20 or so classes,
But next year they'll have it coming :D
-
good results there well done green finger keep them coming please my next show is the 28th im hoping i will have enough to enter

Well done, you had some fine looking entries. I didn't know you could show your onions dressed or undressed. (Ooh matron).
If you have any advice on how to grow a decent sized onion please let us know. Onions are one thing I fail at every year.
-
growing a decent size onion all comes down to the soil preparation which im regreting because i did'nt really bother doing so, hence the size of the onions in the pic.
ive heard people say to dig plenty of manure in the onion bed at diging time.
a good way ive been told is to dig trenches were you are going to plant your onions,
Spread some horse muck all over the bottom of the trenches and then cover them with compost,
so basicly its layering, when you plant your onion the roots will grow down into the manure and feed it thoughout the season. You can add some feeds like blood fish and bonemeal to the manure or compost as well. This is what im going experiment with next year.
also which is very important is the onion needs a long time to grow if you want a big un, so to get the best results plant your seeds in december or even earlyer
well i hoped this has helped, mind you im only an amateaur
any one who has read this please can you tell me your methods
As i wanna grow decent sized onions as well
thanks Green finger
