i use the large water trays for plants for placing their feed in and also drainpipes cut in half an screw onto wood of either the side of the house that prevents any muck getting in the food an theres hardly any spillage .

Thank you all for your helpful tips and advise. 

I now need to decide what type of feeder to have as I hadn't thought of some of the different options lol.

I quite like the idea of the drainpipe on the side of house. We have some allready cut as I used it to hold reels of ribbon in my workroom ( I am a cake decorator) Hubby would be pleased to use it for the chooks.

For spare or emergency feeders or waterers, I check the local charity shops. You can often pick up old dog bowls and other heavy dishes really cheaply and you are recycling.
