Title: What I did in the Greenhouse or Polytunnel today
Post by: DD. on March 28, 2014, 16:38
As requested.

Please only post here what is relevant to greenhouses and polytunnels.

Feel free to also post the same information in the "What I did on the plot today" thread as greenhouses and polytunnels are all part of the plot!

More scallions.  More coriander.  And more lettuce.

And sowed runner beans in the propagator to be moved into the PT when germinated.

Pretty worried that the toms have been sown too early.

Will be sowing sugar snap peas this lunchtime.  Off to open the doors at both ends.  My min max thermometer is giving highs of 35+C if doors left closed so need to monitor that!

Moved Peppers, tomatoes and Aubergine plants from window sill to PT.  Hoping that my 6 x 220 litre water heatsinks are going to keep nighttime temps up enough.

Potted on tomatoes , peppers, chillies etc. Sowed a few flower seeds. Split and potted on a supermarket living herb parsley plant. Topped up the taters in pots to cover the haulms. Sowed a bit more spinach, more radish and noticed some more sweet peas coming up.

Frantically searched for any germinated pepper seeds, without luck. Watered all the cell trays and helped a few Ferline tomatoes shed their seed cases.  Gave the strawberry tower a good soaking as they look to be sending out flower stems   Sowed another 12 Arnold for root stock but Im out of cell trays now so  :(

I found that all the 20 carefully labelled pots of tomato seeds & 4 pots of chilli seeds plus peppers & auberge news that I lovingly sowed on Saturday were all labelled with a water soluble pen    so now I have no idea what varieties they are, & I was going to be oh so methodical this year.

I'm very cross as I watered from below but it's still washed off,how on a plastic label I don't know. I'm tempted to resow but some were the last in the packet or some from the pas the parcel on here. I've no idea what the pen was doing in the seed tub either.

I too will be playing the "does the wood marker mean cweet peppers or chilli peppers" game later in the season  :nowink:

Not a lot to do this morning - moved the herbs and the salads off the heated bed as they're getting leggy, the La diva cukes have germinated  :D and the strawbs are definitely about to flower

Alea Jacta Est!

1 seed of each, Cuke Passandra, Cuke Femspot, Butternut Squash, Courgette, Melon Charantais sowed into 9cm pots and into the propagator.

I'll do another batch in a weeks time and then the main sowing in mid April.

Lovely and warm in the PT today!!!  Harvested radishes and lettuce.

Potted on the legend and ferline toms and the paris island cos. Sowed another 12 cells of spring onions from 3 different seed suppliers  ::)

Emptied out the compost I sowed the valamaine lettuce into as none have germinated, I think the seeds gone over now - bought it in 2005 so I can't really complain.

Repotted toms, rearranged plants to squeeze yet more in, vented psb seedlings as they've popped up, removed a couple of snails that were having a chomp, moved some brassicas to the cold frame.  If it's going to go colder next week will have to reorganise again  ...or get another plastic tom house & fleece as a 2nd extension :nowink:

Sown 15 cobra french climbing beans.

Watered what needed it and planted out spring onions and lettuce from modules into the raised beds.  Potted up some peppers.

Made a wigwam and planted runner beans round it in raised bed.  Sowed Sweetcorn into the propagator, sowed dwarf french beans into the propagator, sowed cucumbers into propagator.

Sowed a patch of radish direct into raised beds. Planted out pak choi from modules into raised beds.  Planted coriander from modules into raised beds.

Put first tomatoes into raised beds...they are 15 inch high and worried that they are too early but they do look good.  sungold and shirley varieties.

Things are getting v v busy in the old PT!!!!!!

Built this... what a palava.  Needed to be done though the cukes were pressed against the 6" high frame I cobbled together a week or so ago. Gives me 12" growing height at the back and sits on my heated bench, making it 1 big propagator  :D

Just need to fashion a lid stay now.

Tempted fate by sowing the sweetcorn.. The house is unheated, but not been below 8 degrees the last couple of nights, and they're all tucked up inside lots & lots of bubble wrap... if they fail... then so be it.. I've another 7 packets from the Wyevale end of season sale

Potted on the chilli peppers, cucamelons , tatsoi and arnold root stock toms. Sowed another mushy tub of radish and the pepino seeds which arrived this morning. Planted a couple dwarf French beans out in the top greenhouse border along with a row of frubund carrots. It's getting petty crowded in the bottom GH now

Lifted the lid on the propogator this morning to find there had been a spider explosion overnight - little yellow spiders were everywhere  :nowink:

I think this is one of the most boring stages of growing - everything has germinated and I'm just waiting for them to get big enough to pot on. Makes me want to sow more seed  Nothing to do but give everything a good soaking.

Had morning cuppa, elevenses, lunch and then coffee this afternoon in there - really cold East wind outside.

Managed to do some potting on as well  and noticed that school garden tomatoes are just showing through  :)

Had morning cuppa, elevenses, lunch and then coffee this afternoon in there

I tried to do that today - couldn't find anywhere to put my coffee mug down, plants everywhere  :nowink:

Had to water everything again - this compost seems to be drying very quickly  . Noticed the celtuce has started to germinate and the tatsoi is still on steroids  Need to start clearing things up and out so I can get ready for the putting out the toms.  I should get 14 plants in the bottom GH it's just a question of which varieties.

Tidied all the staging and got rid of pots and things I haven't used. Hosed down the new stones laid in the 2nd greenhouse to get rid of the lime. Sowed some

Tomatoes
6x Harbinger
6x Hidares
2x Ferline (thought I had more)
6x Red Pear

3x Market more cucumber
12x Little Gem Lettuce
6x Lolla Rossa Lettuce
20x Solo F1 Beetroot
20x Chioggia Beetroot
48x Belstar Calabrese
24x Ormskirk Savoy Cabbage

Just remembered I have some other seeds to sow I forgot about so will do them tomorrow.  :D

Picked Radishes, Rocket and Lettuce to go with tonights home made meat balls and pasta.

Toms are now about 15-18 inches tall and in their beds.  Whether I started to early or not they look OK for it.  Wondering if day length issues will affect the crop....

It'll depend on how cold they get at night, still getting near zero some nights here  :(

We've been very lucky with the weather this year, if you'd have tried it last year it would have ended in tears  ;)

Nothing to do really today, but potted on some of the toms for the bottom GH Im keeping the spares in cells hoping the root stock catch up. Watered and fed the strawberry tower. I pruned off every leaf which looked sickly and it seems to have halted whatever it was  :D might actually get some strawbs this year  Picked a few green things and some radish. No sign of the pepino or physalis yet.

Post by: Lardman on April 19, 2014, 17:31
I thought it was cold in there last night when I looked this morning Id left the window open all night   >:(

Still not a lot to do, sowed some butternut squash, sunshine and crown prince watered the dry cells and shouted at the chocolate habanero, physalis , pepino , black cherry, fandango and roma seeds, still no sign of any of them.

Started tube grafting,

Ferline onto Arnold
California wonder (sweet pepper) onto Ferline
Brandy wine onto Russian Black

I was using one of those snappable craft knife blades but wasn't doing to well, so smashed my way into a BIC orange disposable and the blade in that was scary sharp but much more suitable for the job.  :D Everything is in the healing chamber now - exciting.

Now the new greenhouse is up I am franticly moving everything from the house onto the staging, managed to pot on 70 cauliflower seedlings and some pot marigolds,  Have another load of different cauliflowers to pot on together with two varieties of Brussels, really interested to see what the difference in tomatoes will be this year.

Still nothing really to do, played the sliding block game with the trays - always fun.

The fandango and black cherry toms have germinated as have lots of the physalis which isn't bad considering they were saved from bought fruit 2 years ago.  Potted on the black from tula and put some aubergine seeds in to try and graft.

Still not sure if I should try growing cukes / melons in the bottom greenhouse or keep them all in the top one   but need to make a decision soon as things are starting to put tendrils  :)

Nothing seems to have wilted yet in the healing chamber  another couple of days and I should be able to tell if the grafts have taken.

Scattered a few blue pellets as something has been munching on my strawbs

Title: Re: What I did in the Greenhouse or Polytunnel today

Trying to avoid doing some work this afternoon  ::) Potted on the cukes , iznik, la diva, carmen all doing well - miniture white seems a little slower. Melons and cucamelons also on the slow side. Potted on a few of the brandy wine and black prince toms, the rest can stay in cell trays for a bit.  Juggled things around again , I really should stop sowing a tray of seed when I want just 1-2 of a plant.

Some of the toms and peppers are showing signs of nutrient deficiency already  not impressed with the compost this year at all, that's less than a month for some of the plants. Will give them a feed to pep them up a bit as it's going to be a few weeks still before they're big enough to be put out.

Sprayed the strawbs as they were covered with greenfly which seem to have appeared from nowhere overnight.

The carrots in the top GH border have started to germinate  :)

Tidied, sowed and kept out of the rain! Started to realise with all the stuff in there either germinating or being kept warm (mostly under fleece and bubble wrap as it's not heated)! that i'll run out of space on the shelves before it all goes outside onto the plot... Mike... hurry up and finish the new cold frame please!

Potted on 1 each of the inzik and la diva cukes. I've held the others back as the larger pots/plants wont fit inside the cold frame over night ... just incase  ;) Potted on the mini-white, they really are slow compared to the F1 varieties. Final potting on of my arnold donor plant, I'll root the side shoots as Im out of seeds. Split some canes for the Cucamelon as they're still in 4" pots but were grabbing things.

Started thinking about plant supports, since I've shorten the bench I can now get another 4 pots in on the sides, Im considering growing the cukes there and up and over rather than up a mesh trellis in the middle.

My spare room seems to have become a very full 'heated greenhouse' whilst the cold snap moves through  :tongue2:  I'm ok if I keep the door closed, the family will never know...... shhhhhh......
On the other hand, the extra shelf space I 'found' (think very large white magnetic pin board on a keyboard stand!) opens up all sorts of possibilities for next year  :D

It's a risk but I'm not moving anything from the PT during the cold snap.  Banking on my heat sinks seeing things through with their thermal mass.

Hacked away at the Capsicum Annuums today taking off the heads and some leaves to see if it promotes bushiness...either that or kill em...

Lots of tinkering today  :)

Rummaged around the bag of bits left over from re-assembling the greenhouse and found 8 wire hanging things so was able to string wire across the roof on both sides. Drilled and screwed some fixing into the brick base for another wire running down both sides at the bottom then put strings between the two. Used 120l of compost, a 1kg box of growmore and a packet of water retaining gel and potted on 2 of each of my tomato plants into their final positions.

Potted up the cukes as they'd started to flower - expect they'll be dead in the morning  :nowink: I'm going to try training them up strings rather than letting them scrabble up mesh or trellis.

Moving stuff back outside from spare room.... moving stuff from greenhouse inner sanctum ...to outer cool house ....to cold frame....
sowed a few more courgettes as seem to have ended up with only 2 plants, but last year 10 was a few too many  8)
also more kale, poppies and beans, beans and beans.  Toms in flower but we'll see-  I have history, me and tomatoes. bottom end rot, split, dead, tough.  Trying greenhouse cherries first time (gartenperle) to see if that works better for me.

... I need a bigger greenhouse.  ::)

Potted on the Jals and Californian wonder, Trinidad scorpion and bhut jolokia (which are growing so slowly) and put the mini -white cukes out in the top greenhouse so they can scramble up the chicken wire which is bolted to the sides. There was a tonne of stuff I wanted to do, like sowing beans, courgettes and more salad stuff, but I've run out of compost  and nothing was going to get me anywhere near been and queued on a bank holiday !

Dwarf French beans in the top greenhouse are in flower but the carrots have had very patchy germination.  :(

Second pic is my pride and joy...Aji Amarillo from Peru.

aha! finally grabbed a bag of John innes no 2 in the rain (and I had my posh work clothes on) as happened to have parked near the garden centre  8)  Those desperate poor cukes that have been waiting only got repotted after I'd potted on the squashes as I'd run out of mid sized pots....that was a crazy half hour.

Leave the garlic for another 6 weeks and it will be fine - in on the shortest, out on the longest  ;)

Sowed 4 types of courgette , potted on the last of the peppers, divided and potted on the parsley. Put the cucamelons in their final positions, 2 in the top greenhouse and 2 in the bottom. Took the rest of the tomatoes up to the top greenhouse ready to go out, just trying to decided if I should sink some pots or plant direct

Pinched out the side shoots from the arnold tomato and put them in compost to try grafting round #3 and noticed the iznik cuke has some mini-cukes on it  :D

Spent the rest of the day turning the house upside down looking for the casement stay for the window I pinched the auto-opener from - do you think I can find it, can I heck as like !

Finished constructing my new greenhouse so now I can post :) transferred all my plants from the kitchen windowsills and into the greenhouse (don't worry I've purchased a paraffin heater just incase I need to keep temps up at night). Didn't realise how many tomato and pepper plants I had. The sungold tomatoes are flowering as are the redskin peppers.

Also got mini cukes on the Passandra.  Redness coming on strawberries and lots of flowers on toms, peppers and dare I say it....aubergines.

Won't hold my breath for the Aubs though.  They sound tricky to say the least.

Fed Chillis, Toms, Peppers and Aubergines with Tomorite.  Not sure about it all being too early but the date's recorded so if it wasn't right this time then next year...might be.4

Adri

Not sure if Tom feed is any good for Aubs.

Put a wire the full length of the PT tied to the hoops.  Then dangled twine for cukes to grow up.  Looks good but I would have preferred a trellis of some sort.  One string looks so insubstantial.

Spotted my first pepper!!!!

Aji Escabeche.  About 1.5 inches long. I know that some advise taking off the first peppers but how can I? It would be like cutting off my own arm...well not quite but is it really necessary?  There seems to be different advice according to the pepper type too so given I'm a newbie to peppers/chillis I might be doing just the wrong thing by nipping off my first baby....

Anyway, must be doing something more or less right.

Watered.. snaffled the only ripe-ish strawberry and water some more. Moved the vent higher up, as the tomato in front of it was sulking and potted on the last of the toms for the bottom greenhouse. Potted up some of the self set hot lemon peppers from the top greenhouse and put some French beans in modules. Fed the chickens the bolted tatsoi, coriander and lettuce.

Watered, sideshooted and chucked out everything which had run to seed.  Moaned at the cucamelons for being a waste of space and spoke sharply to the la diva cuke which insists on putting out side shoots and not climbing up the strings.

Things seem to have stalled here

Picked the first 3 ripe Strawberries of the year ;-)
Congratulated myself at how well the capillary matting watering system had done in the 6 days we've been away, and smiled that some of the 3rd batch of sweetcorn sowings have come through whilst we've been gone.

Watered, side-shooted and put up more supports at roof level.  Sowed salad leaves and potted on some living herbs from the supermarket.  Fast approaching the time to bin the seedlings I can't possible find a space for  :( and clean away the cold weather and germination kit.

In the top greenhouse the dwarf beans seem to be taking forever and the carrot germination is very poor, the mini-white cukes aren't looking healthy at all but cucamelons seem to have finally sorted themselves out.

More sideshooting - the toms aren't looking too good and there's definitely something funny going on with the brandy wine. Watered lots - I've used most of the 220l over the past 2 days

Picked the ripe strawbs - there are definitely 2 types in there one has horrible bitter fruit the other is passable but not exactly delicious - I'll be kicking the lot out next week I think to use the space for peppers.

Up in the top GH the dwarf beans have finally started to set but everything else in there was looking very sickly so I've given it all a feed and hopefully things will pick up.

I Potted on 2 physalis plants and moved the cold frame from the heated bench to give me a bit more space. Picked a few more strawberries and fed them to the chickens  Moved the beetroot seed trays up to the top GH  5 out of 40 have germinated

Watered everything Id missed over the weekend and then picked my first cuke.  :tongue2:

Kicked out the strawbs today - so many covered in botrytis and it had started to spread to the tomatoes.  :( I had tried really hard this year to keep a good air flow around them but it just doesn't seem to help.

Gave all the toms a short back and sides removing furry leaves and donated all the bolted salads to the chickens.

Im really not happy with the growth on the tomatoes this year - they're all scrunched up and curled almost like amniowhatshisface but without the bleaching.     The two melon plants look very sick so they'll be heading for the compost at the weekend and none of the 20 french beans have germinated.   >:(

Yesterday picked up the grafted cukes 'Passandra' from the post office (missed them on Friday ) and in the evening before work, set them into their final pots.

I have 3 in the back of the greenhouse and 3 outside against the back wall of the house (the bricks really hold the heat from the day until late in the evening - and I actually succeeded with outdoor cukes in that spot last year). ;)

Our first Passandra is about ready for harvesting.  Looks about 14cm or so now.  Packet says 15-20cm so we'll wait a few days more and pick...

Can't wait.  Last time we grew cukes was years ago in a greenhouse I built for my dad.

Had a good clear out, so that the removable potting shed could be removed, to make way for the growing toms underneath.
All of the stuff that's still not big enough to go out on the plot was moved to the cold frame, so the indoor cues could be potted into their final positions.

Pulled couple of bolted lettuce and replaced with new plants.  Watered everything and misted cukes and toms...need to check on whether misting is right for toms.  Not sure.

Some people mist tomato flowers to help with setting, but it shouldn't be necessary - an occasional tap of the stems is usually enough.

Misting tomato leaves is a bad idea - it will only increase the chances of blight or other fungal spores germinating and taking hold.
You should try to keep tomato leaves as dry as possible at all times, including when watering.

+ + + +

Tomatoes mostly looking quite good in my GH, with the exception of the Inca plum plants which are looking quite sickly at the moment, which is a bit hard to fathom as they've been a trouble-free 'banker' for the past few years.

Not killed my cukes yet, although they are only at the first true leaf stage and have only just been transplanted.

Big clear out over the weekend.

In the bottom GH I've potted on about a dozen of the peppers both chilli and sweet. The rest have been taken up to the top GH where I'll see if I can squash them into the beds. I also potted up my single pepino plant, it's taken 8 years of trying but I've finally germinated 1 seed. ::) If anything happens to it I'll cry.

Discarded all the leftover tomato, pepper, physalis and cucumber plants. Took all the peppers out of that duff compost and put lettuce in there, hopefully the hot peppers can be saved. The compost had a definite whiff of stagnant water to it  .

Potted on 2 miniature white cukes for the lean-to GH and 1 black cherry tomato Im not getting on well with the shelves in there at all so they're coming out.

Side shooted, tied in, watered and fed everything then hacked back some of the lower leaves to let everything breath more easily.

In the top GH, I put the wires up and started to string up the toms, the miniature white cukes are doing much better, not sure if thats the shading or the can of comfrey feed I gave them.  Tried to tie the cucamelons in but they're an untidy (and fruitless) bunch.

Nipped out the top of the first lot of toms in the PT.  Couldn't reach the top one so will have to get the steps out tomorrow...Nice predicament.

Looks like we'll be swamped with cukes soon.  Already had a few but there's tons on the way.

Chucked out a few slugs...B@st@r**!!!  Resisted pellets up to now but next season will make more defences including electric fences round the raised beds.

Looking forward to collecting the new (2nd hand) greenhouse for plot 29 later in the week, so I can pot on the remaining chilli's

I stood inside the new greenhouse as Mike was putting it up.. handed him lots of Glazing clips, and put lots of the (I think they're called) W clips on the glass!

That now takes us to: 1 "proper" greenhouse, 1 home built greenhouse, and 1 lean to greenhouse.

Just a shame none of them can be heated early in the season :-(

After work (at 9pm this evening) went to check the Big Drippa system, but ended up taking out loads of unnecessary tomato leaves and tied back all toms and cukes (which had all had a 24 hour growth spurt of their own!!)

Starting to look like land of the triffids in there!!

Watered, fed and tied in Tomatoes and Cucumbers in the PT at the Plot.  Planted 15 dahlias in one of the PT borders - hoping to get some nice show Dahlias from them.  Dug up the peas and half the carrots in preparation for planting the Peppers and Chilli's on Sunday.

I came home and potted on some young plants I have growing in the greenhouse at home.  I need to do a big clear on in there and take the staging down so that I can give the Toms and Cucks in there more space to grow.  Will hopefully get that done on Monday.

Cut out the lower leaves on the toms.  Much better now.  Easier for watering/fertilising and will be better ventilation.

Now using "Bumper Crop" fert as recommended by one of the users here.  Looks good stuff.

Now using "Bumper Crop" fert as recommended by one of the users here.  Looks good stuff.

Be interested to see the results and hear what you think in a couple of weeks - I prefer granules to liquid but Im torn between this and their No 4 (which I assume is the same as chempak's No 4).

Bit of clear up today - removed the sideshoots, lower leaves and anything looking sickly. I had 3 tomatoes in that dubious compost so emptied those out, very little root growth at all. I've potted them on in fresh compost hopefully they will recover.

Planted out a tray of jalapenos and some californian wonder in the top greenhouse, things are really badly organised up there , it's such a mess :(

Noticed some of the sungold are finally starting to change colour :D  The tomato season fast approaches ... and not a moment too soon, despite my early start this year it's less than a week sooner than last year, hardly seems worth the effort.

Thinking about binning the cucamelons in the bottom GH, they're not doing very well, taking up space and there are 2 plants in the top GH, added to which Im not entirely fond of them.

Bumper crop instructions say...1gram per litre and then 1 litre per 10m2 (That can't be right)  10m2!!!!

I just mixed 10 grams with 10 litres and watered liberally all round toms, cukes and peppers...see what happens...

So today we dug the beds inside the house, then covered with membrane for this year - still not 100% sure on the layout, so this buys us some time and the toms are happy in their flower buckets.

Moved the 10 toms & 1 chilli from the flyaway into the glass house, staging up and ready for the chilli's, but need Mike to fix the autovent window frame first.

Finally got round to tying up the tomatoes, well most of them, side shooting them at the same time & removing some grotty looking leaves as well. Just the 8 cucumber plants to go & the 2rows of toms that are in the middle of the g/house but they might go to where I normally place them as they are still so tiny, but they might be cherry ones.

Mike fixed the autovent window, once this was done I could then move the last 13 chilli plants from the cold frame to their new home.

Picked the first sungold tomato tonight - it was so good.  :tongue2:

Bit more sideshooting splashed some water around the top GH it really needs a good soaking tomorrow though, Im still trying to save the cukes and applied a foliar feed of epsom salts.  My new glass cutter arrived this morning, so I was able to finish cutting the replacement panels for the bottom GH without breaking any more  ::)

Tempted to plant a few more cuke seeds

Had a few Sungold Toms already.  They were great tasting but only the size of a marble.  Is that right?  I know they are cherry toms but still seemed a bit titchy.

Sungold do seem to vary, probably in the range of sizes I (just about  ::)) remember marbles used to - doesn't worry me, although they do seem more prone to splitting than other cherry types.

Put another 2 levels  on the cucumber climbing frame.
Watered and fed. :)

Watered the tomatoes and green leafy things and side shooted.

Removed 2 mushy tomatoes from the black Russian plant, cut away some dodgy looking leaves from the brandy wine. Sowed another couple of iznik cukes as things really aren't looking good.

Actually everything is looking rather off in the bottom greenhouse at the moment, not sure what I've done to cause it might have to "hands off" for a bit and see if things recover.

Slightly better in the top greenhouse, the tomatoes are looking healthy and the fruit are swelling nicely, the peppers I planted at the weekend seem to have settled in and purple french beans are still producing all be it slowly.

Massive clear out today.  :)

Everyone got a a "short back and sides". I binned the fandango and one Ace 55VF plants, nothing had set on either. I checked the other ace 55VF and every single tomato had blossom end rot  So that's off the list for next year, the black Russian are on thin ice too.

Took a couple of the sickly looking bell peppers up the top greenhouse and put them in the border where Id removed the dwarf beans from - Potted on my 2 replacement isnik cuckes and put them on the bench as flowers are forming  :)  Picked a few shirley but they've split too I really am struggling with the watering this year.

At least now I can get in there without wrestling with branches  ::) Might clear up the top GH tomorrow if I get 5 minutes.

Tomatoes are still looking very green and fresh so I am leaving the leaves on and just taking off the ones under the bottom fruit.

Cucumbers are about had it so will wait for last couple of fruits and then discard.

Aubergines are wonderful this year and I still have about six fruits ripening.

Melons from last years saved seeds are doing well and I should have several fruits and last year they kept well.

Peppers and chilies are ripening well and I have already had loads of fruit, lots of sweet peppers have gone into the pasta sauce, and lots of chilies are drying.  Last of the Basil will be picked and dried this week.

That's it - the big seasonal switch over has taken place.

The tomatoes have finished now and there were only a couple of green fruits on the whole lot, so out they came today.  The peppers were almost all red, so they were picked and the plants have gone.  Same with the cuamelons.  The leaves on these were actually yellowing and starting to drop.  Only the chilli and some parsley seedlings left in there now.

The decks are cleared for the final harvests from the plots to dry out - onions, dried beans and squashes will take up residence soon and I'll move the fig back in at the weekend and maybe start a few trays of salad greens  :)

Clean out day in the bottom greenhouse, it's time to say goodbye to the tomatoes.  :( Special mention this year to 'sweet aperitif' which despite a slow start has produced literally hundreds of very tasty cherry sized, meaty fruit. I've already ordered a new packet of seed for next year  :nowink: I think they will replace my sungold as the safety cherry in case the more exotic fail.

We are renewing the raised beds in the PT.  We dug out the soil and discovered that the poles on one side had moved inwards by more than 10 cms. We had to dig down to the base plates, push them back into place and we cemented them in place this time.  I had noticed that the cover looked a bit looser this year but assumed it was just that it had stretched, when we left for home this afternoon it looked much tighter.

Planted a bush Peach Rochester and a seedless grape both supplied impeccably by RV Rogers of Pickering.  Can't recommend them highly enough.  Bought from them before and they are very good nurserymen!!!

Might go for another Peach variety in there too as even though they are supposed to be self fertile I hear that adding other trees will help with fruit setting/pollination.  Is that true?

Moved the parsley and rosemary onto the heated bench, played musical seed trays (heated bench to kitchen window). I'm leaving the peppers out but bringing in the pepino. Moved the radish off the heat as they're going mad but no sigh as yet of the early toms, chard or salad stuff.

Would be nice to get an afternoon out there to clean up properly, I might even move the bench away from the far end as next doors tree is casting a gloomy shadow over it. There's also the small matter of last years tom pots to empty  :(

So behind already  :(

Started to wash the glass on the bottom GH but was absolutely cream crackered after 1 side  It's just no fun to try and get he algae from between the overlapping glass. Seriously thinking of leaving it for now and slowly working my way around taking a section out at a time, washing it and refitting.

Emptied the last dregs of compost into a 20 cell tray so I could start off some tomatoes, getting more has been on the to do list now for nearly 2 weeks everything is on hold now until I do.

I've still got some rhubarb in flower buckets in there , so chanced it and covered 1 to see if I can force it.

Cleaned a few pots and gravel trays and mused over moving the potting bench again as I'm still not happy with the layout.

It's grey, gloomy and rather cold here today but managed to find some time to spend in the greenhouse. Upped the thermostat on bench to 18C hopefully to keep things around 10C overnight.

Most of the tomatoes (15 varieties) have now germinated, I'll start another tray off next week as a backup.
No sign of the sweetpeas so I've resown those.
The peppers and pepinos now have a few true leaves but I think it's still a little cold for them.
Cell trays of paris island cos, garlic chives, chives , spring onions and valmaine sown.
Mushroom tub of Leek Toledo
Divided up the curly parsley it's not looking too well.

Looked for the pot of mint I had outside but everything now just looks like pots of weeds  ::)

Still pondering about moving the bench ... will have to make a decision soon though as things are filling up in there.

Feeling really meh about the plot this year

Feeling much the same here..  Not considered the outside beds at all yet this year.

I spent most of the afternoon mooching around the bottom greenhouse to to drum up some enthusiasm. Potted on the early tomatoes, divided up the chard and gave everything a soak. The chives are up as are a few of the garlic chives, leeks but only 1 paris island cos and 1 high scent sweetpea.

The curly parsley is covered in both white and greenfly but the flat leaf stuff can probably stand a hair cut.  The mint seems to be waking up but will probably need splitting, looks like I've killed yet another rosemary bush though  >:(

Peppers, tomatoes, pepinos and physallis all growing slowly and Im still bringing them into the house at night.

Kicked out the flat leaf and curled parsley and also the mint everything was covered in white fly  I really don't want to start spraying already.

Im still trying to get the algae from between the glass overlaps. Soap and water just doesn't seems to be shifting it so I've filled the sprayer with jeyes and giving it a good soaking. I'll leave it a few days and repeat.  I still have a sulphur candle from last year, I may empty the plants out tomorrow and set that off too

The dwarf french beans have finally made an appearance, the tray I thought were chives are actually spring onions  ::) and about 3 of the sweet peas have finally germinated  :( I'll try one more sowing from the seeds I bought this year.

The tomatoes were potted on yesterday and the second sowing have just started to germinate.  Looking back at this thread I was sowing cucumbers this time last year

yeah got 2 cues up and away already from a sowing 3 days ago in the spare room.  Toms and chillis looking ok, but indoors again.  Peas, rocket, lettuce and early herbs looking ok in the cold greenhouse.  I've chanced some marigolds in there as well.  Its getting full-ish and there's a way to go yet

Marigolds up already in the greenhouse, salads all showing through, aired it out a bit in case there is a damping off problem looming- it's getting so full.  Peas now outside in the shelter.
Sowed more cues and some Sweet Pea current mini-sized tomatoes in the propagator.

Kicked out all but 1 of the rhubarb plants as the 3rd in the garden has made an appearance.  :D
Kicked out the rosemary.
Hardened off some euonymus cuttings.
Potted up some winter jasmine cuttings.
Found a tray of winter panseys Id sown.. oops, might pot some on as they were about to flower.  ::)
Only 2 paris island cos lettuce have germinated and still no chives. Might get more seeds before resowing.

Watered everything - it's getting very warm in there during the day which is drying the compost really quickly.

Knifed a slug  it ended up as robin food.

Everything is staying out on the bench under the polycarb frame as it's above 10c in there at night. Will look at sowing a couple of cukes and maybe some melons tomorrow.

Potted on the toms- honestly don't know how I ended up with that many!  Oh yes now i remember- seed circle  ::)
My La divas cues looking nice but did I really need all 4 to germinate on top of the other 3 varieties?
Pumpkins seeds sown (12 really, really?) all snug inside in the spare room....Can't be bothered with loads of brassicas (I've done some red sprouts and PSB)- but I'm the only one cutting sprouts, chard, kale and PSB currently and I'll regret it next year I know... :(  How long have I got and will they catch up if I wait until after the rush has calmed down?

In a renewed attempt to replace all my dead herbs:
Potted on basil
Sowed Rosemary
Sowed Parsley
Sowed Chives
Potted on the chilli peppers and pinched out the tips on 2 of the jals, not something id normally but thought Id try it this year.
Sowed a cell tray of purple climbing French beans
All the cukes are up, I'll sow some more next week in anticipation of killing this lot

Fetched some compost yesterday ready for the tomatoes to go out.

Potted on only the toms, peppers and chillis that I actually need  ::) left the others as plugs for either my next door neighbour or the allotment 'help yourself' table. *gives self pat on back*

Cape gooseberries done as well............

Parsley still to do - when I've drunk my coffee  :D

This year I started the lobelia, petunias and nicotiana sprinkled thinly over mini plug modules in the trays - so I may actually get more - as I won't squash sooo many

Which ones are you doing MoS ? The big (supermarket sized) ones or the smaller pineapple tasting ones? I've struggled to get a crop off the bigger ones before the frosts set in but started them really early this year as they were on their last warning.  ::)

If that was from the seed circle here MOS then they are the big ones...
Personally had no luck with the smaller type but the one I took seeds from for the circle grew like a triffid and swamped out most everything else in the GH. I managed to overwinter it and have just put the plant out in a sunny spot in the garden.

I managed to overwinter it ..

Where'd you do that ? Both the one I had in the top GH border and the one in the pot in the bottom GH both turned their toes up when we had the quick cold snap.

Things are nearly ready to be potted on, the problem with small pots and this time of year is keeping them wet  >:( So everything got a good soaking and the very dry stuff in now standing in cat litter trays full of water.

Sowed yellow climbing French beans and a cell tray of beetroot, divided the old pot of spearmint up into a few 6" pots and a couple of 3" ones.

Put 4 dwarf French beans out in the top GH border hopefully they'll be more productive than last years. I have a feeling I should swap out the soil up there, but I really wanted to raise the entire thing up on a dwarf wall before I did that.

Need to sow more Rio Grande toms as they're a no show but other than that everything is just ticking along.

Honestly this thing was a beast... Just in an unheated GH in a Morrisons flower bucket. Plenty of chicken pellets and water but that was it. Maybe a degree or two warmer down here over the cold months...
I suspect that 'baldy berry' may become renown in the UK if the seed circle scions do similar.  :D
Out in the garden now and its about 3 foot tall and looking healthy.

Today, potted on numerous toms ready for the local hospice sale. Not only feeling good about doing a good deed, but freeing up space too.  ;)

Potted up another "give away" tray of tomatoes and physallis plants. I'm using up some cheap cell trays putting 1 plant of each variety in and then printing out a key so people know what's what.  :) Saves giving away my matching pots and writing out lots of labels.  ;)

Opening up the bottom GH this morning I noticed a few flower buds on the Black Russian and sub arctic plenty tomatoes.   :) I really should pot those on into their 10" pots. First flower buds are also appearing on the Jal I didn't pinch out and the pepnio plants seem to be going really well this year  Fingers crossed for more than 1 unripe fruit.

I've still done nothing with the top greenhouse though.

It's fast approaching 'C' day again this year, but there's a lot less heading off to the compost heap this time.

A few of the purple French beans are up, no sign of the yellow though. Just 2 out of 12 sweatpeas  have germinated  Im not sure if it's a bit late for a 3rd sowing?  Plenty of flowers on the tomatoes now so they'll go into their final pots after the cold spell.  Cukes are on their first true leaves, everything is just ticking over.  I should really think about sowing some crops for the beds outside.

Tomatoes out in their big pots and 2 bags of compost gone  :) I'll hold off direct planting in the top gh for a while until the weather sorts itself out.

Very poor germination from things this year, looks like I'll need to resow both types of french bean as I've only got 2 plants from 24 seed even the beetroot will need to be done again.

Potted up some toms- I seem to have loads- you know when they say sow two seeds and discard the weakest?  am I the only one who can't bear to throw out a perfectly good plant  ::)....

Squashes & courgettes all in the greenhouse now, with the few that didn't work having another go in the spare room.  Surprised that all the borlottis 'hatched' outside; thought it was too cold and I'd lost them- 100% but s/corn only about 70%.  Peas Moved to 'almost' outside and brassicas & salads & marigolds now hardening off.
Cues still indoors for a few more days, although forecasting over 10 for the next few nights so soon and very soon....
Chillis hanging in there but not growing much, will pot on as soon as I can find some room somewhere...

I've changed up my compost and got another bag of jacks magic to re sow- that Waitrose stuff was well rubbish.
Potted up loads of psb and sprouts, sowed a load more brassicas (Kales), herbs, did another guttering of lettuce.
Re sowed a lot of the squashes, Only 10 made it through
Moved the cool stuff outside high up to avoid slugs whilst it hardens off.  Worried about the sweetcorn, half was ok but the rest is still in the rubbish compost.  May have to intervene tomorrow if nothing shows.

Still no French beans

Bottom GH

Watered everything Im beginning to remember how annoying that is. Searched high and low for as many gravel trays as I could find to put under the tomato pots most have seen better days. As a quick fix I've ordered some washing up bowls from trashco to make up the numbers.

Cukes are a little lethargic this year as are the peppers but the physallis and pepino are putting on good growth. Tomatoes have been in flower for a while and the Black Russian have sprouted mega flowers again, not sure if that's a variety thing? The early sown glacier and sub-Arctic don't seem to be any more advanced, so again - someone please remind me not to bother next year.

Top GH

Dusty dry borders so everything got a good soaking, wish I hadn't put the GH up level so I could use a water butt - must put that on the list of things to fix. The borders are covered in newly germinated tomatoes from last years dis guarded fruit  but the planted toms are looking a little yellow. Good growth on the dwarf beans and they have started to flower.

I think it's time to be looking at tomato feed.

Busy week and I'd left the GH alone - it's not been happy about it

Bottom GH
Moved out the polycarb cold frame as the plants had reached the roof so I couldn't shut it anyway.
Potted up the cukes, they're in smaller pots this year and I'll keep them on the bench, with gravel trays under.
Put all the toms into their final positions
Side-shooted all the toms. Where on earth did they all come from ?
Potted all the basil in the troughs.
Potted up the peppers and toms I had from Suttons.
Gave everything a good soaking.

Top GH
We have tomatoes  :D
Watered and fed as things are looking very sticky.

Not sure what to put in the space I have up there at the moment.

Stripped it all down for summer- put out the things that need to be out, planted the hardened off stuff, removed the inner plastic cover from the 4 tier, and removed the plastic corrugated doors, which leaves an open ended sheltered lean to for the chillis and toms.  It was 40 degrees in there today!  Forecast is 10-12 overnights for the next 2 weeks, but I might throw fleece over if I think it really needs it.

Greenhouse put up finally at the weekend so can join this thread  :)
Dug out one side of it and laid out weed fabric and covered with stones, paved down the middle.
Potted into final places, my 5 cucumber plants and first 3 biggest tomato plants into bottomless flower buckets on grow bags. Watered well and fed them. Butternut squash, pumpkins and courgettes there until ready to plant.
After work tomorrow, will dig out the other side, put weed fabric and stones down and start on next grow bags. Have 14 more toms to pot as didn't expect them all to grow.  ;)

Sowed my free herb seed, oregano, dill and parsley.

Shirley, Aisla Craig, Gardeners Delight, Sungold, Octavia and maybe a few more when I go to the garden centre. The cucumbers are still in the house but I'm probably putting them in the polytunnel when I get that recovered!

Spent what felt like ages taking sideshoots off the tomatoes. The plants are about a foot tall now and (I think) growing quite quickly. Am hoping I am getting the watering right, this is the first year of greenhouse growing.

Still got far far too many plants in pots in the greenhouse and I hope I can get them out and into the ground soon.

We built our greenhouse yesterday (finally - only took 4 months!). The instructions were terrible - so badly put together, missing out important points and very few diagrams. But we got there; it's glazed, just need to fix it down.

We dumped 1 dahlia into it last night so there was something in it, but today I need to get my staging up, get my toms and peppers in, then start tidying the garden.

Very happy though. It took so long to get built I still can't believe it's actually up.

Took out all the staging and planted 4 more tomatoes in the ground. I've ordered some wide shelf brackets so I can keep the chillies indoors in pots and am having a think about how/whether to put a hanging basket in the rafters. I can see it won't be long till I have to cut my way in.

I am quite pleased to report I am on top of the sideshooting...and there are lots of flowers appearing on the tommie plants.

Binned the 2 pots of basil they were very sick and covered in greenfly and gave all the green stuff which had run to seed to the chickens. Watered everything, even with the gravel trays under the pots things are drying out very quickly this year.

Im still considering removing the bench, it's handy and the heated cable is useful in the spring but it's taking up a lot of room   I'll have to make a decision quickly though as the cukes are starting to climb... So far behind again.  :(

Dug out other half of my greenhouse, put down weed fabric and stones ready for potting the rest of my tomatoes tomorrow.
Half of sweetcorn potted as chitted really well. Shoots are enormous. Pot rest tomorrow as whole packet germinated unexpectedly  ;)
PSB showing shoots now too. Parsnips chitted and couple of them showing tiny sprouts.
Biggest tomato plants plants have few small tomatoes. Don't know which they are as were given.

Dismantled the bench - it feels huge in there again now  :D

Cukes are on the floor which should give them another 2 ft to scramble up. Sideshooted - and potted some up.
The basil has something nasty, almost looks like weedkiller damage
Pepinos are in flower so hopefully ripe fruit this year.
Nothing worthwhile from the comfrey press as yet so it looks like I might have to buy commercial tomato feed.  >:(

Given my continual problems with growing in the open Im tempted to lift the chippings and create beds in there for next season.

I'm miles away from ripe tomatoes - even from the plants I started in Feb

I've put out the peppers in the top GH, fed and watered everything.  Lots of tomatoes with unset flowers, Im guessing that's the heat causing a pollen problem.
Cukes are beginning to look a little ropey, will have to keep an eye on them.
The basil is terrible - might kick that out into the open air to see if it will perk up.
Plenty of flowers on the pepino plants  :)

With everything back against the glass I have a 4ft gap in the middle which feels a complete waste of space  :nowink: I really do need to get a grip on how best to use the space in there.

Gradually clearing out leftovers and am down to the cues (blasted 'la diva', well-named fussy little madam) and the Konsa's are out already on the plot with shelter and shading today.
Loads of tom plants, some set- me; the girl that can't grow toms.  Until I discovered cherry tomatoes- I've for pea sized ones, 100 and 1000s and gartenperle.  Chancing my luck on the seed circle ones as well- fingers crossed there.

Chillis looking ok, basil perked up (the lidl re-pots not the seedlings- they didn't come to anything; cold spring).  Brassicas all out.
Starting second sowings of peas and beans inside as the mices can't get at them.  Now I've having my first good pea harvest this year I'm a convert to raw peas  8) and I've never liked them cooked so hadn't bothered to grow them before!

Thoroughly watered everything in sight. The 100s&1000s toms are growing really well, as are most of the others, but the smell of all the tomato flowers has me in a sneezing fit each time I go in the greenhouse. Most of the plants are now have about 3 trusses each. Some of them have forked, so aren't as tall.

Some of the plants were only supposed to be inside till the weather cheered up - I've kicked out the rhubarb (grown from the pass the parcel seeds) and also a very large kiwano which was attaching itself to anything it could find. The watermelons and kajari melons still have to go out, but there is currently no spare space for them...

Watered  ::)

Lost the fight with the aphids and I've had to cut the peppers back and spray with a commercial product  Cukes are yellowing both fruit and leaves. I gave me some epsom salts a few days ago if they don't pick up I'm not keeping them limping along this year.

Tied the tomatoes up and side shooted. Lots growth but not many trusses this year and those that are there seem very short (4-6 fruit on the cherrys) . 1 tomato turning red on the sub-Arctic plenty 5 months to the day since they were sown  - 50-60 days my foot !

I now have 3 pepino fruit  :D Im managing to keep the aphids down on them by hand squishing for the time being, perhaps I will get a ripe one this year

Bit fed up with the bottom GH again.  :(

Up in the top GH I planted out some of the side shoots Id struck for emergencies and removed the comfrey pipe to give a little more space. The barrel outside has given a little over 2.4 gallons so far  so the pipe was rather redundant.

I finally took down the Kent Blue and Golden Podded mangetout plants yesterday and picked off all the dried pea pods for my seed supply next year.

On the way to work, I had stopped at been and queued for compost and found a couple of plum tomato plants languishing on the reduced trolley.  Amongst the tragic and down right motley collection, these 2 were pretty much OK.  Watered them at work, then planted them up when I got home.  You could almost hear them sigh with relief to get out of their small pots and into a bucket of good moist compost  :)

Everything else is still merrily growing away, but I am regretting drenching some of the plants in comfrey water. Greenhouse stinks.

Bottom GH

Im really struggling with aphids and white fly. I've had to put the peppers outside to knock the infestation back a bit.  Cukes are still looking very yellow despite epsom salts and a feeding, they're on 7 days notice I've already sown a few more to replace them.
Couple of the toms have reached the roof, as it's still early Im pinching those out and running low side shoots and a second cordon.
Pepinos are yellow a little too but largely on old leaves, none of the other flowers have set though  :(
Physallis plants are just getting on with life, plenty of flowers but so far there doesn't look to be any fruit.
The tray of crimson crush I started from side shoots all seem to have rooted - Im tempted to plant them outside where the garlic was as I can't use the bed for anything else.

Top GH
Watered, weeded out the chickweed and self set tomatoes. Tied up the plants I put out last week - wish Id have labelled them  ::)  The peppers up there are doing much better than the bottom GH but are still a little on the yellow side.

I was going to pull up the dwarf french beans until I realised there was nothing to replace them with yet.

First year with a greenhouse and it's packed full
Fellow plot holder asked if I needed any tomatoes?
Really don't but he was going to throw them away!
Popped them into slightly bigger pots but today put them into their final big pots but they have to go outside the greenhouse.
Have 7 of them and they look really healthy. Glad I took them  :)

Bottom GH.
Picked a few toms and a cuke. The first crimson crush is starting to turn colour too  :)
I fed them at the weekend with comfrey and it looks like someone has been in there with weedkiller again  :( so I gave them more epsom salts. I did put some in the comfrey but it hasn't seem to help.

Top GH.
Put out a few more of the side shoots but it's getting a little late now.
Removed the dwarf french beans - Not doing that again next year, and this time I mean it !
Watered and fed with the same comfrey as the bottom GH, but it doesn't seem to do any harm up here? The only difference I can see is the bottom GH is compost in pots and the top GH is border soil.   Too rich?

Sideshooted the tomatoes and removed some more of the lower leaves from some of the plants to get some light to the fruit as well as the peppers and aubergines. Tried my hand at pollinating some of the lipstick pepper flowers I've isolated, but they are at the back and the tomato plants are hard to get around without being absolutely covered in pollen, which makes me sneeze.

Picked 2 Tsygansky Baron peppers - lots more to come. They are a nice snack size, about 4-5 inches long, pointy and black rather than green.

Lardy is the bottom greenhouse in an area that traps any cold at night  (a frost pocket in winter)
so that they're getting extreme changes in temperature between day and night?

The 2 toms at the end of the plastic greenhouse (which has a permanently open window, unlike the glasshouse) are both curly now after a couple of cold nights/hot day combos. None of the other toms are curly.

I've not reset the min/max for a while but it's not in a frost pocket, but does get a big temperature swing.

I think you may have bee right with the Mg problem as things have picked up since yesterday's foliar feed. Here's a quick picture though - those leaves will now wither and die. I've cut right back on the mix down to just 30ml in 6ltr which barely turns the water brown.  The leaf was curled but no marks before I fed.

I've had 3 attempts to clean the bottom GH and it's all still covered in algae   I just sprayed everything with jeyes and left it now. Im a bit too chicken to try the pressure washer but I'm seriously considering one of those water fed scrubbing brush things you see them cleaning windows with.

Still no sign of my sweet-peas or the broad beans it's probably been long enough to worry. I presoaked the peas and chitted the beans (old seeds) so I know they were alive. They were in the last of the been and queued compost though.
100% germination from the radish using bulrush multi in cells, which is nice.
2 padron peppers have also made a show in the heated propagator. They'll go very leggy if the light levels don't improve.

I'm trying to grow less stuff but better this year, and it would be nice to get some salad stuff sorted.

I've used the pressure washer before. Set it to the widest fan you can and start from a fair distance away and gradually move in closer until the grime starts to shift. The algae doesn't take a lot of pressure to knock it off.

Busy weekend ... I've been feeling left behind with all my seeds sat in their packets. The good weather has tempted me into the bottom GH.

Into modules :

Spring onion - Lilia, White Lisbon, Ishikura and Ramrod.
Swiss Chard - Bright lights.
Sweetpea - Early multifloral, heaven scent.
Tomato - Rio Grande, Shirley, Sungold, Black Cherry, Sweet aperitif.
Nasturtium - Princess of India
Marigold - Sparky mix, French
Aubrieta - Royal Red
Cucumber - Marketmore 76 . Early Burpless
Dwarf French Bean - Purple Queen
Beetroot - Bolthardy Detroit Dark Red
Echium - Pininana
Lettuce - Valamiane, Mesclun Mix, Paris Island Cos, Misticanza

Herbs and more flowery things still to sow, but I've misplaced one of my seed boxes  ::)

Potted on some mock orange cuttings which had rooted. I had left them in a family pot outside a couple of years back and I thought they were all dead. I tipped them out to reuse the pot but peeling back the moss and removing the ash / sycamores they're still alive  :D

At the end of last year I put some garlic in pots and I've kept them in the GH since, I noticed rather a lot of flies around them today, I really hope they're not allium leaf miners

Carrots in the recycling box are up.

I'm trying to grow less stuff but better this year, and it would be nice to get some salad stuff sorted.
Me too- less types and no risky or weird stuff (apart from red heritage corn).  I'm getting boring.
It's feeling really strange playing it slow this year, first set of brassicas all looking ok (found a couple of baby slugs under a pot- keep an eye out!) Detriot dark red coming along, and some early chioggia too.  A few bits and pieces- peas second sowing, salad and just started the cues indoors.  Toms may need redoing after the frost and they got left out in the unheated greenhouse.  Did some early runners today and a courgette or two, got set up  for sowing the pumpkins and corn later this week.  Spuds, garlic, PSB and peas all going well down t'plot.  Nights are due to be cold next week- 4-5 degrees with northerlies. so maybe I'll hold off longer.
I'm not running to keep up this year.  It's weird.  I hope I don't regret it later.....

Fought my way into the bottom greenhouse.  It's not good.  :(

It's been a while since I've had a chance to get in there and things have been rather neglected. Most of the green leafy has run to seed and the cell trays look dry and crispy. I've soaked most of it hopefully some of the toms and peppers will be ok the jury is out on the rest of it.

Im a little stuck for pots with all of my 5ltr ones being used for the grafted apples so anything that perks up will be going into 15ltr which feels such a waste.  I might see if I can get to the top GH this afternoon, hopefully that will just need the borders turning over.  :nowink:

Potted up the toms, I've managed to save enough to make it worth while even if they'll be a little late this year. Shirley, black cherry, rio grande and sweet aperitif and a sickly sungold. The chilli's aren't looking so good though and the lollipop labels didn't do to well left soaking  ::)

To my surprise both the early burpless and the marketmore cukes picked up after sitting in water for a few days  :) the la diva didn't fair so well - i've resown.

All the herbs are toast as is most of the lettuce but it could have been worse.

Clean out time.  It's been a bit of a rubbish year and things have reached a natural end.

Too many cukes this year and the 2 new varieties I grew both repeated badly  :(  the chickens liked them though.

I fed the tomatoes some comfrey early on and they really didn't like it, Im not sure if I mixed it too strong or if it's contaminated with something (note to self to buy a commercial food next year). They limped along and produced a dozen or so fruit each, ok for a shirley not impressive for a sungold.

The chilli's have yet to produce, it's getting a bit late so I'll look at overwintering them and the pepino are again nothing more than spider mite food.

No sign of blight or botrytis this year - Im not sure if that's just luck, the increased plant spacing or the fact I soaked cleaned everything with jeyes in the winter.

Moss and algae all over the place, the overwintered peppers are dead and furry, the physallis has dropped its fruit and we wont say anything about the things in 3" pots which never made it into the garden last year  ::)

It really needs a good clean and a then a spray with jeyes, on the list as is finding the salad seeds.

Yes my greenhouse needs a jolly good clean inside & out too. I went in today to access the dustbin of compost to fill some trays & pots, but I brought those into the kitchen, watered them with hot water to warm the compost before sowing onions- 3 varieties, aubergines-2 varieties, chilli's-2 varieties, alpine strawberries & some lemon grass. Yesterday we dug it out and turned it 90 degrees and today the OH started building a wooden frame for it to sit on ( he's been watching youtube videos). He's cemented in posts and attached a frame so it's raising the height by about 12" should hopefully complete it tomorrow. The cover should go back on next week so fingers crossed I can start planting!!
I miss my tunnel and my neighbours have just put up a new one!!

I inherited 2 green houses 6ft x 8ft and another 5ft x 6ft.
I have removed some of the glass and replaced some of the clips as they have rusted.
I also move the staging to the sunny side and put my potatoes in trays to chit under a tripple layer of fleece.
Will be sowny my caullies and calabrese in modules this week.

Yesterday we managed to get the polytunnel cover back on and secured to it's new wooden base just before the high winds tried to take it back off! There's a few tears in the plastic but I'll fix them with tape for this season. The door frame is in position I just need to make a door but I've still to dig drainage channels, lay 50m drainage pipe and fill it with gravel (the area it stands in gets very waterlogged) which I hope to get done this coming week.

Been in my greenhouses clearing out last year’s clutter and emptying compost out onto the  garden but mainly making space for the repairman to repair damage caused by a flying plastic chair 🙈😫🙄

All done and ready for the coming growing season. So, carry on cleaning continues. It’s my fave garden job, apart from compost stirring of course 😃

The cover has been on for a few days now and already the temps are slightly higher inside than out, even without the doors fitted. The soil is drying nicely too, so all being well I'll be able to mark out the beds and paths tomorrow, put up the staging and if my arm injured arm is up to it start rough digging the beds to help the drying process.

Oh dear it's that time of year again when I look in the GH's and wish someone would come and clean them out for me  :nowink:

I've put a few of the newly grafted trees in there as bad weather is forecast, binned the tatsoi ? which was flowering  and noticed there were a few self set physalis seedlings growing in the gravel path, might as well transplant those  :)

The air layered blueberry has woken up as have both the airlayered and rooted the figs, but attempt number 17 to graft the plums from the top of the garden onto a dwarf rootstock looks to be deader than a dead thing in a deadery

The plan is to dig out the borders in the bottom GH this year as I've not done very well in pots and grab some living salads from the supermarket to get a jump on the season. And I'll have to confess to buying seeds yesterday  ::)

There's still time if someone wants to come and clean the greenhouses for me ?   :nowink:

I've managed to get the border made in the bottom GH - I've gone with just one side at the moment, if it works out I'll go around in a U shape as I have in the top GH.  There's a nasty hard pan where the gravel has compacted things down so much so I couldn't get a fork or spade in (even standing on them  ) and there's no way Im swinging the mattock in there.

I've added 6" of spent compost and chicken poo for the time being to see if that softens it, as my only other option is a twisty, prongy, thing the old man bought and I consigned to the "it's not a real tool" side of the shed.

Sprinkled a few leeks in a mushy tub and although I said never again, the shop bought castano garlic I pushed into the old tomato pots looks to be doing well so that needs to be dealt with or at least fed.

The top GH doesn't look too bad, just a few salads run to seed. I'll push the hoe over it, give it a good soaking and put in some carrots and a few french beans I think.

I had this problem in the large greenhouse I inherited at my plot. Spreading a mix of MPC and well rotted manure in a 2" layer and watering a couple of times a week completely changed things in less than 6 months with the worms doing the digging for me - you can now (if you wanted too) easily dig the ground with bare hands.

I hope you're right - it's a very hard "soft sand" pan and the soil in my sand pit is pretty lifeless unless you count ants.

More tidying up and re-organising today, I've not had 5 mins to buy some salads yet and for the life of me I can't find any carrot seeds in the seed box  Grafted some apples and put them in a shade spot and noticed the new blueberry is in full flower  :D Having failed miserably with hardwood and softwood cuttings I'm really pleased with the airlayering.

Ventured back into the bottom greenhouse today - it's been a while.

Spread out the gravel I'd just piled in the middle when I dug the border and moved the benches back to the opposite wall. There's no time (or energy) left to dig the other side this year. Watered the figs they're doing nicely but no sign of fruit yet. The climbing beans are up - 100% germination  makes a change. No sign of the courgettes though.

The pan under the compost in the border was still as hard as nails, I've had to use the garden claw thing (surprisingly useful) to break up some holes for the tomato plants.  Planted out 2 sungold and 2 sweet aperitif the rest aren't ready, the 3rd shirley sowing has only just made an appearance so it late in the day for a crop.  After planting there still looked a really big gap at the back by the glass so I've added 2 pepper plants from some aldi sweet peppers I bought last year which tasted rather nice.

I'll fill the other gaps with whatever green leafy I can get to germinate at the moment that's just endives and radicchio. The jury is still out on how best or even where to grow this years cukes, along the glass, in the gable or in pots on the other side. The top greenhouse is still empty, but I've struggled to get them to grow in there in previous years the border is very sandy despite 8 years of spent compost and doesn't hold moisture well at all.

Last of the cukes picked this morning and another tub of Shirley toms. I've given up picking the sweet aperitif it's too much like hard work and the sungold finished a while back.  The aldi saved seed peppers haven't really ripened, which is a shame given the summer we had, they're picked and the plants trimmed back. I may try and overwinter them. It's clean up time really.

Overall what's done well has been excellent, certainly the best year in the bottom GH I've had. I'm not sure if that's the weather, the switch to commercial plant food or growing in the soil rather than pots.  Certainly needed as I was getting rather cheesed off with the continual problems in there.

Cleaned out the bottom GH today. All the dead material gone and the beds turned over. I don't really want to add any more compost to them and there's no chicken poo to use this year. I might have to resort the BFB and growmore.  I'm hoping to do better with the salads and peppers in there this year.

I switched to a bait box in the top GH and something has eaten 15 poison blocks so far  I'm going to have to buy more, but at this point I don't know if I'm killing them or fattening them up  ::)

Our local rat catcher advised me to wait for a wek after the biat has ben taken, to allow it to kill the culprits. If you put more down atrigth away the same rats/mice will eat that lot to. I now use snappy traps inside the tunnels which does keep the mouse numbers down

Makes sense, I'll give them a break from it as they've eaten another 15 blocks since I posted that.  I tried the snap traps, the rats dragged off the mouse trap (it was staked down but the sand I call soil didn't help) I found the trap but the retaining clip was lost and the mice eat the bait off the rat trap without springing it.  Whilst pottering about up there today I did consider putting a mesh skirt around the base to stop them digging in as I did with the chicken run.

Bottom GH
Had to resow the lettuce, the hot and cold of recent weeks had pretty much done for it.
Garlic is up and growing fast by the glass fingers crossed on that this year.
Scattered a few slug pellets after finding some lurking in seed trays.
Water the figs
Water the grafted apples
... just about everything I could find to avoid cleaning the glass  :nowink:

Top GH
Tipped the ants out of the bait traps

Sowed three rows of peas in lengths of guttering suspended in the tunnel. Once they are of a suitable size they will be moved into the bed outside. Also planted up two 42ltr buckets with some left over Maris Piper tubers to see if I can get a head start on my potatoes this year, first year with the tunnel so it’s all a bit of an experiment at the moment. Bound to be some highs and lows, will endeavour to keep a record here.

When I got my new greenhouse I gave away a seed tray holder as I was given a nicer one - regretting that now.🙄so have spent the morning rearranging seed trays and pots.  Also took down my net curtain that I had put for shade as it’s not so sunny over the next couple of days.  Tomatoes going well, peppers going along at their own pace.  Took the plunge today and planted dwarf French beans (Boston) and climbing french bean - mixed colours.  I think I will wait till next week to plant more stuff like courgettes and cucumbers etc.

Potted on chillis and peppers today.  I have put my tomatoes in their grow bags and put 11 in the poly tunnel at the allotment last week.. Going away soon so I wanted them out of the green house.  Beans are up and courgettes are just popping up too.  Planted some squash seeds this week and put them in a propagator in the greenhouse. Also took delivery of 20 Cambridge favourite bare root strawberries so potted them and settled them down to grow for next year.  Busy greenhouse at the moment, wish it warm up a bit though and be a bit drier.

In the tunnel, I earthed up the spuds & at home in the greenhouse I put the strings up for toms & cucumbers & placed them all in the final positions but since I’d already potted them into the pots the other day I had to find other means of attaching the strings to the pots/ plants as opposed to planting the string under the plant

I use membrane pegs / tent pegs pushed in next to the toms - they're small enough not to damage too many roots, once you start to tie in the plant weight will keep the string tight anyway so it's not really needed.  ;)

Thanks Lards, be used the tent peg method for runner beans before now, :) I actually tied some strings around the edge of the pots, some to the actual stem of the plant & some through holes that we made in the pot rim for this purpose some years ago (plastic flower buckets from supermarkets).

Watered and tied in the toms.  The left hand side of the GH which I think ::) are the sungold  are just forming their first trusses and needed side shooting,  nothing yet on the right hand side toms. The cukes are very much sulking across the gable end, they appear healthy enough just slow to grow.

The sun came out so I finally summoned the energy to start cutting down the furry tomato stems and the dried out physalis from the bottom greenhouse.

Looks like either Mickey or Rodney has been living in there over winter so I'll need to deal with that sooner rather than later. I need to clear out the stuff I've been keeping which might be useful, as there are lots of plant pots with odd bits of string, wire, clips, pegs and label in. It needs a bit of general maintenance now, some pointing and the guttering need sorting but after a good wash things should be ready for another season  :)
