Title: The Floral Parade - your pictures
Post by: New shoot on January 02, 2019, 15:42
I've done a couple of similar threads, but time for a proper sticky topic I think.

It doesn't have to be an actual flower, just an ornamental plant you have grown and are proud of, is looking lovely or brightens your day somehow.

I'll start with a couple - the first spring flowers in my garden are some pretty cyclamen and the garrya is having it's moment of glory.  It is a good screening evergreen and is easily clipped into shape, but the tassels are something a bit special, especially at this time of year when not much else is doing much  :)

Lovely, every year I say I’m going to get a garrya, maybe this year will be the one lol

These are always the first snowdrops to bloom in my garden  :)  They are next to my little wildlife pond and are just starting to bud and flower.

the cyclamen are looking great, and I have one snowdrop appeared,  (do pigeons peck these?).  The Iberis haven't stopped flowering all year.  The lobelia and bedding begonias are all doing well. French Marigolds, and the Skimmia, lovely berries, but I am worried about the leaves, they are looking a bit bleached.

I would like a Garrya, but haven't got the room.  This is such a nice thread.  regards,  Mrs Bouquet

Fantastic display of tulips at Hardwick Hall on Good Friday in the walled garden borders - they start with white ones at one end (not in picture) and progress through yellows, oranges and reds through to deep purple (behind me, also not in picture.)

I have pictures of the tulip parade here at chez NS today  :)  Its not quite as grand as a walled garden border (ooohh how I wish), but they are pretty enough for my little garden  :D

Tulip Gavota and Synaeda Amor, which are new.  The pink ones are more muted than the picture in real life, but I thought they looked lovely back lit by the Easter sunshine.  Finally some pink and white mix ones I can't remember the name of, as I have had them for years.

Dahlias at home.  I've treated myself to a couple of big, dark brown salt glazed pots and this selection of peachy, apricot and soft orange colours looks lovely in them and against the weathered brick of my old house  :D

Been a bit lax keeping this up to date

The autumn cyclamen are in full swing now.  They have self seeded all over the place and this one is in the path next to my back gate.

The dwarf Japanese anemones are also flowering well.  This is one of the Pretty Lady series and I think it is Emily, but I am not totally sure of that.

New year and there were some flowers around - not many, but something pretty to share  :)

The Garrya I started the thread with is back out in flower, with some red berries from Nandina in the foreground to set it off.

Then a cheerful little viola that is sitting in a pot of bulbs that are just shooting.  I have bulbs coming up everywhere and some nice new ones to share when they are out, but the viola steals the show for today  :)

Plot primroses.

These started as a few scrawny plants rescued from the communal dump heap.  I saw flowers struggling through the waste and rescued them.  A couple of years on and the little spot I planted them in next to my darlek bins is a blaze of colour  :D

A pretty, but perhaps not exceptional Azalea in my front garden this afternoon.
What is remarkable is that it was there when I bought the house 21 years ago, and has had literally no care or maintenance of any kind since then - perhaps 20% wider but I for one can certainly forgive a touch of middle aged spread!  ;)

The new, the old and the unknown today

A new iris I bought called Burnt Ember.  I'm not sure if I like it or not   OH says it is out of character with the garden and is just brown and purple  ::)

Next an old favourite.  A cottage garden pink doing its stuff by the back door and looking lovely.

Then one that has seeded in from next door.  Neither of us planted it and we don't know what it is.  It is a very strong stemmed plant so is useful for propping other stuff up in our over stuffed gardens   We both just pull it out when it gets too much.

It might be a 'Skullcap', News?

The only reason why I think this, is because we have a load of 'Wood Forget-me-nots' growing, we wanted to look them up, and your plant is on the next page in our DK book!

What a lovely flower!

Post by: Growster... on May 20, 2020, 18:54
It's a beautiful flower, News, I wish we had something like that, but the 'Wood Forget-me-nots' have appeared from nowhere!

This year, we're sowing some 'Honesty', and so far have about forty plants, which will take some shifting, I can tell you...

As we're not driving anywhere much, there's a huge thistle by the passenger door of the car, where Mrs Growster shows a leg and steps in, and I rather like it, as the stem is about two inches thick, (the thistle, not Mrs Growster's leg), as it's about five ft tall, and is just making yellow flowers!

Sometimes those wild plants tell a big story...

Post by: New shoot on May 21, 2020, 20:26
I wish we had something like that

That's easy enough solved.  I'll try and get some seeds  :)  It can't be too tricky to get going as it appears all over the shop in my garden.  It is not invasive as such, but certainly an enthusiastic self seeder

My neighbour had a single Honesty plant in a pot last year right next to the fence with us.  We have a low wire fence at the front and plants freely move between the 2 gardens.  I now have a whole line of them along the strip next to the drive.  With a 40 strong force, you could take over Kent

Orchid:  Maxillaria tenuifolia (narrow-leaved Maxillaria, or coconut orchid)

Flowers are about 3 - 4 cm across.  Smells like a day at the beach, with a scent exactly like coconut tanning oil. I've had this one about 5 years now.  Grows indoors when cold, outdoors when warm or hot.  Not sure from the preview whether the photo is attached or not(?)

My 'centrepiece' flower border - hollyhocks at rear, heleniums and alstromeria in the middle, two salvias front right.

The hollyhocks are doing remarkably well to say how close together I planted them - was given them by a friend last year who realised they would grow too big for her garden, so I just plonked them in any old how.
4 of about 6 plants now flowering, and I'm really chuffed to see 4 different colours so far.  :)

The alstroemerias and heleniums are herbaceous perennials, the salvias perennials, the hollyhocks either short-lived perennials or biennials (depending on which website you visit to find out!)

On the hollyhock theme but a bit different  :)  This is Alcalthaea suffrutesens Parkfrieden.  It grows tall and upright like a hollyhock, but the flowers are smaller and a bit different.  The bumblebees seem fairly smitten with it.

The other picture is Dahlia Cornel Bronze.   It is the best of the bunch so far for flower power, but the others are budding up.

Dahlia duos today.  I have 3 large pots of them and a mix in each.  Now they have all got going, it is a blaze of colour outside the back door.  They are all in large dark brown pots, picked to go with the plants, but that was a waste of time, 'cos you can't see them for foliage now

I'm sending a photo of another one of my orchids, Laeliocattleya Tropical Pointer 'Cheetah'.  I've had this about 8 years, this is the best it has bloomed for me.

This is my Cattlianthe Golden Wax, which I have owned continuouslysince 1985. I've named this clone 'Allison Irene', after Mrs. Subversive.

The second photo shows what I am growing it in. Yes, that is 100% wine corks. Plastic wine corks, to be specific. Before you mark me as a complete nutter (fair point actually), I'll explain why. Many types of orchids like their roots exposed, and when watered, to have their roots dry completely. This is a perfect solution for that type of orchid, I thought of it a few years ago.

Yet another orchid (I will probably post pictures of a few different ones over the next few weeks). This one is a hybrid, Cymbidium Tommy 'Sweet Lime'. A friend in California sent me a division of this roughly 6 years ago. It stays outside in the cold, except anything actually below freezing, or when it is in bud.  When flowering, it likes to live on our wine cabinet.
