baby chicks poo
« on: June 19, 2009, 06:16 »
i noticed this morning one of the poos which i am assuming is from one of my 10 week old chicks looks like it may have blood in it , could this be from the food they are taking of the adults as my babies are with them full time during the day as they just wont stay in thier run  cheeky beggars . please dont tell me its anything seruios can do without that  :nowink:.

this one was outside their shed but the poos they do during the night all seem fine an all are running an flying everywhere as happy as larry.

Hi looby

I don't know much about chicks but blood in poo can be a sign of coxidiosis.  Have they been on chick feed with a coxidiostat in ?

It coxidiosis is common in young birds especially those that run or come into contact with older birds.  I personally would treat your flock as coxidiosis can spread very quickly.
I would air on the side of of panic and get some Coxoid

But you must be sure that you are not giving the chick medicated "Grower Pellets" as you must not combine the two. You will have to purchase a non medicated grower pellets. I could only find a organic version near me that was undedicated.
As you know karlooben they always look well till its nearly to late.

...........but why cant u mix the two .
Because they will get a double dose of med's.

http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/deptdocs.nsf/all/agdex4616

coccidiosis, a potentially fatal and debilitating disease of chickens.

Coccidiosis is caused by a small intestinal worm and can be fatal if left untreated.

http://www.flytesofancy.co.uk/chickenhouses/Coxoid_Anti-Coccidiosis_Treatment.html#aT673080

I know you get a income from your eggs.  But if your chicks do have coccidiosis then this could (or could have) spread to the rest of your flock.  You may not just be losing 28 days of production but if they die a longer period.

But you know me I always air on the side of caution.

Not a worm Ruff it's a single celled parasite called Eimeria
