What can I grow in a wet patch?!
« on: September 02, 2020, 12:10 »
Hello!
I have been trying to research what I can grow in a patch which seems to retain water. I’m in Leeds (West Yorkshire, UK). There is a very slight slope from the top of my allotment and it seems to drain down and linger on my end row. The soil isn’t clay but quite heavy and sticky. I’m growing leeks in there which seem to be doing well but my chard and red cabbage isn’t flourishing great, seems to have taken ages to grow much at all.
I wondered if anyone can recommend any fruit I could try in this patch that will tolerate the wet ground. Maybe trained blackberries on some trellis...?
Any ideas greatly received!  :nowink:

Ha, thanks :) it’s not quite wet enough for rice  :tongue2: just a bit heavy/sticky. I shall keep researching. Think blackberries might work, I see them growing in boggy areas all along the Leeds canal!

Might be a bit off the wall, but would some of the mushroom grow on half buried logs.

Alternatively could you build some raised beds in this area?

That's a good idea - one of the situations when beds are a good idea horticulturally is where you've got a high water table.  This is a similar situation.

Same vein as the raised bed idea:

On a small scale, try taking a 2-gallon cast-off plastic nursery container. Cut the bottom out of it.  Invert it onto your wet area. Now plant anything you want in it as long as you don't move it.  The roots will extend into that wet soil, you may not need to water.

Thanks - I’ve thought I could put some rotted manure out from the local stables, then put old tyres on top filled with topsoil as a cheaper alternative to raised beds...if I can get some unwanted tyres from somewhere!  Jobs for this week: pop to local mechanics garages!

I think the advice now is not to use old tyres because of the chemicals they leach out, not good for you, your veg or the soil!

Also, I think you'll also find that reputable garages won't let you have tyres anyway owing to waste disposal  regulations.

Blueberries? They like to stay moist. Needs to be acidic soil though...
