Unripe figs
« on: October 09, 2010, 09:38 »
Got about 4lbs of smallish unripe figs which i dont want to waste so was thinking of making chutney with them.
Do you think a mix of unripe figs, onions, apples and sultanas would work?

Open to any other suggestions :)

Thanks

Edited to add, also got a lot of little unripe butternuts, could they go in  another batch with say red toms, onions and garlic?

I did consider doing something with my unripe fig glut but in the end decided that there are better ingredients to put in , green figs would only add bulk.
The little b/nuts is probably a better option, certainly less toxic sap. :)

When you break the unripe fruit off the stalk the sticky white sap can cause skin irritation , a rash and burning sensation . Cooked it is probably ok but the lack of green fig recipes (there are one or two) on t`internet made me think it was not a plus taste wise.

That 'toxic' sap is great for removing bee stings...just keep dabbing the sappy bit of the fig onto the sting and it draws the sting and the pain from the bite..........not a lot of people know that :D

I always thought the recipes for green figs are for a variety of figs that are green- not unripe - 'cause if you look at the  pictures the green figs are pink and ripe, some are also called white  But must admit I'm not that clued up on figs

I did use them last year but didn't have so many and just added them to some green tomato chutney, they added a nice sort of chunkiness.   :)

But having so many this year it would be more a green fig chutney.  Think I'll give it a try and add some diced red pepper as well to give it a different look. 8)

OH's used to eating my experiments :D Trouble is I never write anything down so if they work I never know how much I put in ::) :D
