I know down here in Zummerzet its slightly milder, but i still dont see a major rush to plant any spuds out. Too much hasle. Two more weeks for me i reckon. Got five pots in greenhouse for some real early ones.

It often pays to sit on your hands than be in a busting rush.

Those June frosts still give me nightmares.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Planted some more of mine today, Kestel, Picasso, Desiree and a few Sarpo Mira to finish a row.

Also noticed that the first volunteers are emerging.
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

Oh dear, yesterday I planted my outdoor first earlies.

I put 20 in the 'poly a week ago though.

We're not saying they're going to come to any harm, just that they run a bigger risk, the earlier they plant them.

I stuck a few Rockets in the beds in my polytunnel back in the middle of February, and they're coming up nicely. I've started off a few bags in there as well, ready for going outside in a couple of weeks.

It is not the June frosts that are the worry, then are very rare. Frosts in May are the problem. If your earlies are not up by May they you are not likely to get new potatoes to dig before mid-June.

Last year the real killer here was -6 on 15th May. An exceprionally warn April meant that everybody was caught. 2 layers of fleece was not enough Usually we get a frost about 4th May and that is it.

My tackthis year is a short row of earlies in early, mine went in last weekend, and the rest wait a bit. That way I should only have a few to cover.

I put mine in last week (first earlies) and stuck some more in today. That said, though, there aren't many of 'em and I can cover with a fleece if needed. I did take the precaution of covering them with a healthy wodge of straw (fortunately an apple tree I got a few months ago came in a box full of lovely golden stuff). That should help a bit, shouldn't it?!
