Yes it's very tempting isn't it but the seasons have developed the habit of having more than one corner to turn! 

There is always someone who gets away with early sowing/planting of all sorts of plants. but it isn't necessarily going to be you, especially where you are!

It's not much fun trying to keep late frosts off potato foliage, and it doesn't always work 100% either - my spuds will be planted right at the end of March.

I guess it depends how many spuds you are planning on having and how easy they are to protect. Two years ago I put mine in on St Patricks day and came to grief because of frost. I had some first earlies at home in pots that I simply put a bin bag over to protect them for the night and they were not effected. However my 6 rows of maincrop spuds on the allotment suffered and I lost a row and a half that I had not managed to earth up the previous weekend.

If you just have a few that are easy to protect you could risk putting them in early but not if your going to plant a lot. Mine are going to be planted in a couple of weekends time.

oh dear .... i planted two early crops (charlotte and nicola) on sunday, i blame the sunshine!!!  however they are in bags in the greenhouse.  i'll put a cover on them and fingers crossed they will be ok!

mine will go in then, but they will be in the garden, rather than the allotment, so I can cover them easily if there are any frosts

ooooooooops I put my 1st and 2nd earlies in yesterday...about 10 seed potatos each....and I didn't water them after I put them in.

You're further south & more likely to get away with it.

I know it's dry down there, but they shouldn't need watering.

mine will be going in at Easter, the same as usual, Doesn't matter if easter is early or late in April, its the only time I get a long weekend off.

I put 2 rows in today. I've never yet lost a crop to frost, but there's always a first time. I'm prepared to take the risk...but no doubt will be panicking in a few weeks time!

I have 25 first early spud plants growing away in containers in the greenhouse. I planted them February same as last year and that was a hard winter!

It's a bit different on the plot but I still had quite a few in before the end of March and only got the fleece out a couple of times.

It depends whether you are risk-averse or not and if you have any surplus seed to replace any that might be lost.
