Is this another daft idea?
« on: July 28, 2020, 14:34 »
In a soil bed at the side of our bungalow I have a quite prolific-growing deep blue clematis with a bare base which I will give a good prune early next year. I wondered if I could plant some sweet peas at the base, not only to cover it up but also I don't have anywhere else suitable for them.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Do you know what type of clematis it is as there are different pruning treatments for the different types.

Tricky one this...

Can you get a climbing Jasmine to complement the Clematis?

They both go mad around now, and cover most of the ground to start with, then could climb up together!

Nice quandary - lucky you!

I don't think it is daft, if yo already have the sweet peas, then give it a go, they will cling onto whatever supports the clematis, and at the end on the season just chop away.  Go for it, good luck,   Mrs Bouquet

I think the clematis is an early-ish one because when we came here at the end of June it had stopped flowering. I'll prune it in Feb, order my sweet peas and sow them then get them potted up ready for planting in late April.
